Guest guest
My condition has been pretty stable, but recently the progression has rapidly gotten worse. My hands have been numb for several years, but now they're losing more muscle, and driving my car (with hand controls) has become difficult, since the one hand I use to steer with is painful and weak. Walking is also more painful, and SO fatiguing. At my last visit to the MDA, it was strongly suggested that I consider getting a power wheelchair, to help with the pain and fatigue. I think they're right, and I have to overcome the denial and fear that's been holding me back. It's not vanity, since I am what I am, but the idea is so new and frightening to me. I need your support and suggestions. I figure I won't use it all the time at first but for " relief " , and I'll be prepared if my condition worsens. First question: should I consider a scooter or a chair? What are the advantages of each? What do I look for in choosing a vehicle? How many miles on a battery charge? Are there web sites I can go to for more info? What about maintenance and repairs if needed? What about hills, how much of a grade can I handle? Any words of advice will be welcome as I begin this new adventure. Wheee, here I come! Ruth Be kind. Everyone you meet is struggling with something.
