Guest guest
Hi , On the lindacrabtree.com site there were a couple stories of folks that have had amputations. http://www.lindacrabtree.com/cmtnews/Feet/Feet5.htm I found it to be an informative web site that covered a wide range of issues, some of which I'd not seen covered anywhere else. When I was anticipating I'd need a second foot fusion after an ER tech told me my first one had failed (fortunately, he was incorrect), I also found a thread on the charcot-marie-tooth.org website, in the surgery/bracing/footwear chat forum, concerning amputation. It was from last fall sometime. Someone was considering amputation and had posted a question if anyone else had done it. There was one reply from someone who'd had it done and thought it was the best thing he'd done. The recovery was quicker than from surgeries. I found it strangely reassuring that there was hope, when surgery after surgery doesn't fix anything. The recurring theme I've gotten from people that have had an amputation is that they wish they'd done it years before. I've found that the time comes when I know I'm making a right decision, even if it's an unpleasant one. Good luck with your decision. Guest guest
If this 'bad news' scares you so much, you must do tons of research, talk and meet with others who have had the same experience and get at least 2 other orthopedists opinions. If you choose to go ahead with this, there is no turning back, you must be absolutely 100% certain this is what you want - and not depending on the outcome. This will not take away your CMT either. Being scared for me is a good sign to be extremely cautious in making big life changing decisions. ~ Gretchen
