bad news that scares me

Hi All:

I haven't posted in awhile, but continue to read most everything. I

had my fourth ankle fusion on the same ankle in 5 years back in

June. So far, it isn't healing according to the x-rays. After this

surgery, my surgeon told me that if this one didn't take I shouldn't

consider trying another because there just really isn't enough bone

left to fuse together. She says my bone is crystalizing and she had

to go up higher and drill holes to even find an area to fuse to the

ankle bone.

Anyway, while I was still knocked out, she talked to my husband about all of

this and said that my next option would be a Syme's amputation. That is where

they amputate right above the ankle

joint. I am finally getting to a place where I can handle the idea

of amputation, but only if there's like at least a 90% chance that I

can adjust to a prothesis considering my mobility issues with my

other ankle/foot.

I wear an AFO on my left leg and I really don't have much control of the

foot/ankle without the AFO. So, my questions to the group are:

1. Does anyone know any person with CMT whose had and amputation and adjusted

to a prosthetic ankle/foot?

2. How do I look for another Dr. outside my state? I'm on my 3rd

here in Arkansas and this one is rated the best. Does insurance

typically allow you to seek medical care outside your home state?

Thanking you in advance for the input.
