Geri,

That's not psoriasis, it's just your hot AFOs. Do you have solid ones

up to your knees? Some are being made with holes in them for

ventilation or like mine where they are made more like the metal

braces with just uprights on each side of the leg so your skin can

breathe. It's all a matter of skin contact, the more there is the

hotter they will be.

My AFOS are solid in the back and open in the front except for a wide peace of

plastic and Velcro...some holes were drilled in the back but were drilled from

the outside in so there is peaces that poke my legs. They are very cumbersome

AFOs and heavy and my shoes are heavy also...my knee keeps going out of joint

when I have my AFOs on. so I haven't had them on for a long time..I sweat really

bad in them too..I do ware knee high socks when wearing my AFOs...Thanks Bob

Blessings

Hi Geri -

My son has psoriasis all over his body - but mostly on his knees,

shins, elbows. He has some on his face, scalp and ears, and in his

groin. Patches start out red and rough, then progress to scaly and

then they kind of open up and scab over...it's a vicious cycle. He is always

very itchy. The dermatologist wasn't able to get him any

poermanent relief and steroid creams are scary for long term use. I

have found, amazingly, that Dead Sea Salt Baths help tremendously. I actually

order them Internationally and he uses them 3 or 4 times a week in a soak in the

tub. Then he follows up with a cream (also

containing dead sea salts) and his psoriasis has improved

tremendously! When his psoriasis flares up he usually gets a sore

throat the next day...from the documentation I've seen psoriasis is a common

problem among those with CMT and other diseases. I would have it checked out

the next time you see your doc.

Hello , and Geri

I used to have psoriasis. When I started tanning it went away. When I get it

now, I just sit in front of a sun lamp for 20 minute a day till it's gone. That

may not be a really healthy way to get rid of it, but it worked for me. I

wonder if Vitamin D would help?

I have never heard of psoriasis to be a common condition for those

with CMT. I do have a friend with psoriasis who does not have CMT though.

What Geri described sounded more like the common problem with solid

AFOs, being hot and sticky. Mine used to be that way when I had them.

They used to rub my skin, even making a raw place or two. Now that I

have some with less skin contact that problem has lessened greatly.

Hi Kay -

Thanks for your suggestion. We actually found that whenever we went

to the beach my son who has CMT and psoriasis did have his skin heal

faster. Our dermatologist stopped short of suggesting a tanning

lamp because of his young age...however she absolutely agreed that a

lower SPF would be o.k. for us to use on him to help heal

outbreaks. Between that and the sea salts he is in relatively good

shape these days.

From what I understand there is no permanent cure for psoriasis but

you can keep it at bay with the tanning and I am glad it works for

you!

Hello ,

I just read that vitamin D does help with psoriasis. I also read where a lady

who had trouble walking improved her walking by also taking vitamin D. My

naturopath had mentioned she wanted me to take vitamin D this winter. I will

try it.

Enjoy the day!

In the beginning ... no not that far back ... I bought some

stockinette on the web and wore it under my AFO. It wasn't

satisfactory as it stretched and slipped down as the day wore on. I

started using knee high stockings my wife tossed after wearing a hole

in the toe. I cut off the foot part and pulled the remaining stocking

up. These nylon tubes worked great and lasted many weeks. Now don't

worry, I DID wash them!
