Power Assist Chair

My son went to school yesterday in his new Power Assist Chair with

the biggest smile I have seen on his face in a really long time.

When I picked him up from school he was not tired like he was when

using the manual chair. He had a great day - and was able to keep

up with his friends! I know I made the right decision in getting him

the new chair. His whole personality has perked up!

Many people here believe that children shouldn't have to use

wheelchairs if they have CMT. Many on this site have indicated that

we enable children to be defeated by CMT by not forcing them to wear

AFOs and such. Each child's situation is unique as is each

adults. No two people in life are the same and aren't we blessed

for that. The decision we made for our son was the correct one and

it was such a joy to have him come home from school and be happy and

interactive not sleepy and cranky!

I am probably the last person on earth to know about this

technology - but I was amazed by this chair. If anyone would like

more information let me know. You still get the exercise of your

upper body as if you are using a manual chair, but when the battery

is turned on, you go further with every turn of the wheel with less

resistance. A truly beautiful device!

The chair stays at school overnight (it's too heavy for me to lift

in and out of the car everyday) but the 6 pound battery comes home.

So far it looks like a single charge will get him through the school

week because he turns it off when he gets to each classroom. Our

homeowners insurance covers the chair no matter where it is. We are

going to take out a separate policy for the chair when we can afford

to do so.

It'll really come in handy next year when he starts high school and

has an even bigger campus to travel.
