About 1/3 comes from protein powder. The rest comes from chicken,

salmon, eggs, steak, low-fat cottage cheese, pork chops, and more.

I really like a vanilla smoothy in the morning. Two scoops of vanilla

protein powder, strawberries, blueberries and peaches all blended

together. Yum...Yum..

Do you feel that you feel better with more protein? I tend to eat more carbs

than proteins and lately I am feeling pretty rotten.

Not to sound stupid but is your protein smoothing causing you to bulk up at

all??? I don't want to look like a body builder I just need to keep the

strength I still have and if possible get back some of what I have lost (from

being lazy!)

Thanks!

I feel better when I eat more protein. Yesterday I went on a binge and ate a

whole bunch of carbs (scones and garlic bread). It filled me up, but I felt

sluggish and tired. I used to eat a lot of carbs and drink a lot of soda in the

past because I rode my bike all the time. If I'm going to be doing a lot of

exercise or hiking, then I'll eat more carbs for the sustained energy.

Otherwise, I try to keep my carb intake down, and especially the sodas.

As far as the bulking up. Yes I have. Unfortunaltly with CMT I know what the

future holds for me. I know that at some point in my life I will be in a wheel

chair. I just choose not to do that when I'm 42. Maybe when I'm 90...but not

at 42. The protein has been doing two things. First, it's keeping my upper

body strong. I don't look like a body builder, but at least I can do basic sit

ups and pushups now. My trainer has also agreed that a strong upper body is a

good foundation for when the bottom half goes to pot.

I have also noticied that when I hike with my new trecking poles, I tend to push

off with my upper body when my legs start to get tired. It's those times that

I'm really glad for the upper body strength.

Now for the lower part and the most important part. In the past 4

weeks that I have been exercising regularly, I have gained 1 inch of

muscle in my thighs. I can now leg press 60 pounds. 4 weeks ago I

couldn't move the plate. My legs just shook. The calves have not

changed. Of course we're not expecting them to. However, the extra

strength in my thighs has really helped with my balance. The other

exercise I do...which I hate. Is rotating my ankles and lifting my

foot up and down. I hate doing these because I have to think to make them work.

And sometimes, I can only do maybe one or two. Even though I don't do very

many, it helps to keep things moving.

I've had AFO for over 10 years. When I first started doing the ankle rotations,

they hurt. So I did them every other day, until finally I do them each night

before going to bed.

What I believe now is so different from what the doctors tell us. I

believe that we CAN build or at least maintain what little we have.

I'm not in the best of shape...but I'm not about to be in that

wheelchair for a long long long time!

What ever you do...DON'T GIVE UP! OTHERWISE CMT WILL BEAT YOU!!! Get out there

and do something. Get up off that chair, or sofa, and do something. You CAN do

it...I know you can, because I'm doing it right now.
