Guest guest
That's a good question. My experience with running a chapter support group is through TACA. We don't obviously have the resources they do, but it has been fairly easy to run the location. Here are my thoughts off the top of my head. 1. Find a free location to hold the meeting. (church, community center, etc.) We are a non-profit so usually they are willing to help with that. Determine if it will be monthly, on a Saturday, during the week, etc.? 2. For TACA...I had mostly beginner subjects like...diet, special ed services, beginning biomed, etc. Anytime I tried to bring something in that was more advanced it bombed because the parents just weren't ready for more advanced topics. This is one of the reasons why I'm leaving TACA for next year...just need to spend my time in a different way. (plus burn out) 3. Determine the types of topics you would like to cover and pinpoint certain practitioners, therapists and services providers in your area who could present on the topic. It's also OK to have support ONLY meetings because sometimes parents have so many questions about all different types of topics that they need that time to just sit and talk and learn from other parents. 4. Get one or two volunteers who are "like minded" with you to help run the meeting with you. (that may take a few meetings to pinpoint those people) 5. Advertise your meeting anywhere you can. It may start out with just a handful of parents, but it will grow as the word spreads. 6. Determine the goals of the group...is it to educate new families or ones already down the road for awhile, or both? Since we are LIA Foundation, the group would need to incorporate education on lyme and other infections which are hindering the children's progress. So what would LIAF provide for the meetings? We would provide materials, literature, website advertising. (that's all I can think of for now) It would be great to do a nice guide but I don't think we could do something like that at this point. For Heidi....since you have recovered kids, once that word gets out, folks could be lined up to come to your meeting to "pick your brain". Guest guest
Rita...I LOVE the path you are on. Here's another to throw into the pile. FACES - Fighting Autism with Cutting Edge Education and Support Just thinking of how some groups talk about the Faces of Autism and then have pictures of our kids all over the place. A doctor I know suggested we name the 2009 conference "Beyond Biomedical". We are though naming the conference "From Roadblocks to Recovery". I know some people have an issue with the word recovery, I don't..I think cure is the troublesome word, what do you all think? Maybe once we have a few suggestions we'll do a vote to see what everyone likes. Guest guest
Tami, I Love FACES!!! FACES - Fighting Autism with Cutting Edge Education and Support Sponsered by LIA You could have a happy or silly face of a recovered child (maybe with their beautiful pink healthy tonge sticking out in silliness), a sad child as they are undiagnosed and starting their Biomed journey, especially mentioning the undiagnosed Lyme/co-infections with links to LIA. It's going to be Great! I have a great before & after picture I can donate. The main problem is they are school pictures so I don't know if I can release copy- rights...although no-one can deny it, they were in the school annuals! I'll send them to you and you can add them in this groups pictures under a file like " High-Speed BioMeds " if you like. Lorina has some great recovery pictures as well!! I know there are many more on this list!!! Our kids improved health does not lie. The word and support needs to get out. Tami, Thank you for all you do!! Guest guest
That would be AWESOME to get before and afters for these kids...maybe Heidi can help with that too! Now I'm getting super motivated to get this thing off the ground. Kristie found a great location for us in Southern CA but I'm wondering if anyone in other parts of the country would want to start one too? T Re: what would you call what we do ... Guest guest
I would love to start a chapter like this. the only problem is the area that I am in. I might just be the only one at the meetings. I think my area is not even able to handle the TACA level yet. But, I could always try.... I REALLY like this idea and love the name! This is a good way to motivate after years of burnout. Jane > > That would be AWESOME to get before and afters for these kids...maybe Heidi can help with that too!??
