Guest guest
Hi Sheila That's great news - where in the UK are you? I was lucky to have private insurance and so got my op quickly, but my Dad needs his right hip replacing and will go on the NHS - he's seeing a consultant in April. We are in Leicestershire - don't know how long the waiting list is here. Thanks Lesley > Hi all, I just thought I'd give the NHS a plug. Guest guest
Hi Lesley, I live in Cornwall. I am not aware if we are have a good reputation regarding waiting lists. But I do know they strive to meet the Gov. standards i.e you should not wait more than one year. I still cannot believe my luck, not that I want to go through the whole process again, but it is better than waiting those extra months. I hope your Dad dosen't have to wait to long for his. I have heard some people on the forum say you may get an earlier op if you say you will accept a cancellation. I wish him all the best anyway. Sheila. Guest guest
Sorry to hear that Caroline, where are you in the UK? Is that because there is less money in your health service or a larger area to cover? either way that is appalling. Sheila. Guest guest
at the time, I lived in London Bridge area... and I managed to get myself a job that had a health scheme that couldn't cut out pre-existing conditions.. and managed to get the private clinic number of the surgeon who had to wait for an appointment for, and got an appointment the next day.. When it came to the op, I went to see him, and he did it 4 weeks later, but only at my request, as I needed to attempt to teach my boyfriend to cook.. >From: " sheilagubbin " <sheilagubbin@...> >Reply-Joint Replacement >Joint Replacement >Subject: Re: NHS >Date: Sat, 27 Mar 2004 10:17:30 -0000 > >Sorry to hear that Caroline, where are you in the UK? Guest guest
Hi Sheila. Just thought I'd let you know my feelings about the N.H.S. In a word 'mixed' springs to mind! I live in Lancashire and am on a 9 month waiting list for LTHR, having waited for 2 months to see the Orthopaedic surgeon prior to my name being put on the op waiting list. I am reasonably happy with this wait given the present climate in the N.H.S. My particular concern is the fact that I was originally given the choice between a hip resurfacing or a total hip replacement at my previous hospital appointment where I was seen by a more junior doctor. Never having heard of resurfacing I was told to " research it on the internet " before making my decision. This I duly did and decided that a resurf was definately for me! I made an appointment to see the consultant to discuss the op only to be told that he did not recommend a resurfacing in a post menopausal female (I am 53 yrs old) because of the bone density problem and possible fracture of neck of femur. I felt very disappointed and let down, but agreed to a ceramic-on-ceramic THR which he said would give me a good level of activity (I don't participate in sports but do like to cycle, walk and garden). I have grown used to the idea of a THR but feel that I wasted important time and effort on something that turned out to be inappropriate. I wonder if this sort of thing has happened to anyone else? Sorry to have 'gone-on' about this. Good luck with your second resurf and thanks for reading this. Kindest regards Su > Hi all, I just thought I'd give the NHS a plug. Guest guest
Hi Sue, thanks for reply. I am not sure about the reasons your surgeon gave you, as I thought that was one of the main arguments for giving younger patients the re surfaced hip. However I do know there is a cost issue involved in the hospital where I had mine done. I think my surgeon is doing it as my other hip is a BHR, as he had no choice because of the metal plate already in my leg. Thanks for the good wishes and good luck to you as well. Guest guest
Thanks for that Sheila - I'll pass that idea on. We have relatives in Cornwall - perhaps he should come down there if it's a shorter wait!!!! Guest guest
Sally, I see that Christie has already given you a wealth of info., so I will say welcome and Good Luck at Reef's appt. The only thing I can add is that I have this info from the UK support board: NHS Referrals In general, helmet therapy is not available on the NHS. However, some hospitals have been known to refer patients for private treatment, which has been paid for by the NHS. So far, these are the hospitals that have been known to refer: University Hospital, Durham Fairfield Hospital, Bury Doncaster & Bassetlaw Hospital, Worksop - Dr Henry Mulenga is the consultant who has referred (according to the Nottingham Evening Post) Basildon Hospital Keep us posted. Guest guest
Steve, Sorry to hear you've had such a rotten experience with the NHS: my own experience is keep on going back to the system and nipping at them. The good news is that time goes on (and staff change) and if you suggest things in terms of the problems you're having you may get somewhere; in some respects you may have more knowledge so if you can go along with information and questions and therefore by going in and stating your case and what you want (and why you want it and why you think it will benefit you) you may get some help that is specific to you. It'll depend on what resources are available to you locally as to what and how much you get. You'll need to be reasonably self motivating while you wait (as you will!) and afterwards - especially afterwards as NHS help is finite - I found the help good to get started but I could do with a follow-up and that just doesn't happen which is a shame. Guest guest
It really helps to get yourself into a good clinic, where you can ask for follow up and regular appointments. I am at the neuromuscular clinic at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. OK it is in London, but with patient choice you can actually have your GP refer you there regardless of where you live. I went on a day patient (checked into hospital for a day only) and saw a bunch of people in my day room (chairs basically) from all over the country. My neurologist is Prof Hanna, but Reilly who does a lot with CMT1A is in the same practice - I reckon as it is the NHS chances are I will not meet either one until I need to. The day patient programme was great - they use more advanced Nerve Conduction tests than UCL (same doctor ironically but better equipment through the National), have orthotists that do standing casts (took me 18 months to get something that works, they tell me it will take one fitting to get the ideal insert now), PT and OT consultations. Ask to come to London. Ask and ask again. A clinic like this makes it all worth it. And they have a nurse practitioner who is on email and helps with absolutely everything. Quickly. Ask for that referral. Ask ask ask. Do I sound like a parrot?! Anyway, I cannot speak highly enough of this place. That said the junior doctors are sometimes needing education but hey if I can help with that so be it. Best wishes, Donna from London
