Guest guest
Hi -- There's no way of knowing where those fowl came from or what they were fed. I know this because there's a local guy here in western MA who sells live birds at Asian markets. Where does he get the birds? Well, anyone can call him and he'll take excess roosters or old hens. If you need a live rooster for your flock, you can call him and go see what breeds he's got. Every few months, when he's got way too many, he takes them all to Springfield (nearest city) and sells them to the Asian immigrant community. The birds come from all different farms. The roosters I gave him (wasn't prepared to eat something I'd raised and loved from chickhood) were organic and pastured. But I doubt that was true for most of the birds he sells. I guess what I'm saying is there's no way to know. Most chickens in small flocks as well as factory farmed are given medicated feed. They may not be confined in battery cages, but that's a far cry from access to pasture. Most organic birds would be eaten by the people who raised them. Probably best to stick to what's available at your food coop. Lierre __________________________________________________
