Guest guest
The only problem I have with the heifer project is the amount of junk mail you get once you donate. We had mailings every other month until I finally called them and told them to save the money we wouldn't be donating to a fund that wasted that much paper. Guest guest
Wanita, I agree with your views. I'm reading the book " Stolen Harvest " which Sally reviewed and the review is on the WAPF site. The author makes the point that food must not only be nourishing but culturally appropriate. Many cultures have sacred traditions surrounding food, and many people of the world will not eat just anything to stay alive. I would also want to know if the Heifer Project is teaching culturally-appropriate self-sufficiency skills.
Guest guest
Hmmmm.... I have not received any further " junk " mailings from them since I donated to them online over two months ago. Perhaps they've changed this policy... Guest guest
Wanita, Thank-you for posting this. It may bother some but if so that is their problem. This is an extremely important consideration. I am also attracted to the Heifer Project but could not contribute until I was certain that no religious indoctrination is included and that local culture is carefully respected and protected. ----- Original Message ----- From: Wanita Sears Sent: Sunday, February 03, 2002 9:04 AM Subject: Re: Heifer Project International I got a Heifer Project mailer 5 years ago or so. It gave me the impression then that missionaries were who went with the livestock to the areas needing them. That did bother me in that I personally believe the cultural beliefs of the many countries of the world should be left intact. Just looking at the website there was a quote saying Heifer Project goes in, teaches self sufficiency skills and leaves. That made me feel better. In the faq though it gives all the world religious groups that are the Heifer Project. If I knew for sure there was no effort other than the world commonalitiy of food raising made to the world recipients of Heifer Project I'd support it. This will likely bother some being a controversial subject. If so, I apologize. Cultural preservation is important to me having Native American ancestry with so much lost.
