Fw: sunlight and your skin

Here is a clip I received from a friend last summer about sunlight.

Here is one reason why the sun has a bad effect on you only if you have a

bad diet. The following excerpt is taken from an article on coconut oil

by Ray Peat (the same argument can and has been made for the bad effects

of refined sugar and flour on the skin by others):

In the l960s, Hartroft and Porta gave an elegant argument for decreasing

the ratio of unsaturated oil to saturated oil in the diet (and thus in

the tissues). They showed that the " age pigment " is produced in

proportion to the ratio of oxidants to antioxidants, multiplied by the

ratio of unsaturated oils to saturated oils. More recently, a variety of

studies have demonstrated that ultraviolet light induces peroxidation in

unsaturated fats, but not saturated fats, and that this occurs in the

skin as well as in vitro. Rabbit experiments, and studies of humans,

showed that the amount of unsaturated oil in the diet strongly affects

the rate at which aged, wrinkled skin develops. The unsaturated fat in

the skin is a major target for the aging and carcinogenic effects of

ultraviolet light, though not necessarily the only one.

So keep up with the raw organic butter (saturated/ can’t buy it at retail

but I do have a mail order source if anyone is interested), virgin

coconut oil (saturated), raw animal fats (saturated/ like cheese made

from unpastuerized milk – available at Whole Foods, Larry’s, QFC, your

local farmers markets, and any upscale cheese shop), unpastuerized milk

(retail at the Olympia COOP), rare steak/ the fat is properly saturated

only if grass fed), carpaccio, sashimi (some), etc.), and extra virgin

olive oil (monounsaturated). Stay away from the polyunsaturated vegetable

oils (canola, corn, safflower, etc.) and the refined sugars and flours

and enjoy the sun to your hearts' content. You will find that if you rub

yourself with virgin coconut oil and olive oil before going out in the

sun you will not burn.
