Spinal Decompression An Option For Back Pain

*WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- *If back pain is a regular problem for you, there's

a new treatment that might help, television station WXII reported.

It's called spinal decompression -- a high-tech machine stretches the spine,

opening up space around the injured discs.

" It creates a negative pressure in the lower back, creating a vacuum-like

effect to help treat herniated discs, disc bulges and degenerative disc

disease, " Dr. Damian Scelfo told the station.

The treatment was discovered somewhat by accident. When astronauts went up

in space, the lack of gravity cured them of back pain. Those principles were

used by NASA to develop the machine, which has been approved by the Food and

Drug Administration.

" They kind of recreated that same thing on the table to cause an

anti-gravity effect on the back, which causes suction of the material back

into the disc, " Scelfo said.

It takes several treatments to allow the disc to heal, but Scelfo said it's

about 86 percent effective.

Connie Strickland is among those seeing the benefits.

" I had a constant, like a knife pain in my back, and it was always there, "

she said. " After the second treatment, it was just gone. "
