I too am having difficulty with posting, so I'll try again...

I met a woman who had a week old baby.(permission to post) She

stated that she had no difficulty bf in the hospital, but once home,

she could not keep him satisfied, so she started exclusively

pumping, and supplementing him as needed. (that is for another

rant) She stated she pumps with a PY on HIGH suction and FAST cycle

for about 15-20 minutes. At the end of her pumping session she is

extreemly weak and shaky, she has to lay down after pumping. The

feeling that she gets is leading her to " early weaning " . She denies

any history except gest. diabetes. She says that she is eating " so

much, I'm almost sick " and drinking to her thirst.

I did tell her to try decreasing the pump suction, as well as the

cycles after letdown. My first ideas were that she was getting a

heavy dose of oxytocin, causing her to be sleepy,(that she percieves

as weakness)and that she might be shaking due to holding the pump up

for 20 minutes at a time. She said that she doesn't feel pain,

but " it's not comfortable " , states her nipples are smaller than a

nickle and she sees both nipple and breast movement in the tunnel.

Any Ideas? What other questions would

you have asked (I didn't write all that I asked, there might have

been more info in my missing post...)

Let me know if you have any ideas... I've never had a mom complain

of anything other than painful nipples when pumping.

PS. With all this talk of frenulums... I had a case where mom had

horrible nipples, when she talked to the Pediatrician about it, her

Pedi told her that her son was too young to " place a label on " !

Thankfully she called for a second opinion... sadly she's been going

through this for 4 weeks! Now we are trying to get someone to take

care of it.

Regarding her "it's not comfortable"--have you asked whether she is emotionally comfortable while pumping?
