Here's my first hand observation of my own small flock. It's winter now, snow on the ground, no bugs in sight. Yet their egg yolks remain orange! I give them as much fresh food as I can scrounge--lots of free, slightly old produce from the local coop. But it's not the same as summer, when they have a wide range of fresh growing greens, plus bugs, reptiles and small mammals (gruesome, but that's what they eat). I'm surprised myself that the yolks are still so orange. Maybe they can store some nutrients in their bodies over the winter? Lierre
