Guest guest
Has anyone looked at the Brewer Pregnancy diet? It basically says that a mother should have at least 2 eggs a day, butter, liver once a week, plenty of protein and salt to taste plus the vegetables and fruits and carbs but the emphasis is definitely that a pregnant woman needs alot of good protein. It isn't perfect but I think is the closest that I have seen. I have the ebook but there is a site. I believe it is www.blueribbonbaby.org Dr.Brewer did alot of studying malnourished pregnant women and it causing preeclampsia, low birth weight premature birth etc.. and his recommendations to fix it are pretty good. Guest guest
Well if you don't like it, don't eat it. But have you tried different prep methods? Like liver with bacon and onions? Chicken livers with apples? I've found if you can vary the delivery, it makes a difference. Guest guest
Here's a few recipes for liver that are easier on the palate.... SCRAPPLE 2 cups ground pork or beef liver 2 cups ground pork OR ground beef 3 cups meat stock 1 cup whole corn meal or buckwheat flour 2 tsp sea salt 1/4 tsp pepper 1 ½ tsp sage Pinch of cayenne Combine meats and broth. Heat to boiling and add seasonings. Add in cornmeal or buckwheat slowly, stirring constantly. Cook 30 minutes. Add cayenne. Pour into an oiled baking dish and chill till firm, Cut into thin slices and brown in butter or olive oil. Scrapple makes a great addition to breakfast, but may be eaten anytime with any meal. CHICKEN LIVERS WITH APPLES 1 lb chicken livers, preferably organic 4 tbsp whole grain flour 1 tsp sea salt ½ tsp paprika 4 tbsp butter 3 ripe apples, cored and sliced 1 tbsp honey or sucanat Dredge livers in mixture of flour, salt, and paprika and saute in 2 tbsp of butter, till both sides are browned. Remove from pan. Add remaining butter. Dredge the apple slices in the honey or sucanat and saute in the butter till slightly tender. Combine livers with apples and serve. Serves 4. Guest guest
HI Dana, My husband was a liver hater, but has learned to eat liver when I fix it my way. Here's a recipe off the top of my hat. Cut the liver into strips about 1/4 inch wide. Cut a couple strips of bacon into 1 inch pieces fry in pan. Add a small onion cut in strips and saute until soft. Push the bacon and onion aside and add a few liver strips, brown them briefly, flip them, clear a spot in the fry pan and add a few more strips of liver. You need enough heat to brown the liver quickly, but not burn things. Your goal is to cook the liver quickly and keep it rare inside. Keep adding liver and turning things until you don't see much raw liver and it's done. Serve immediately. Overcooking liver is the best way to ruin it. Guest guest
Hi Dana, Re. liver, it's hard to get commercial liver that is really fresh, which is probably why most people don't like it. It's very perishable. If you can get very fresh liver from grass-fed animals, you may notice a big difference in taste. I also recommend chopped liver, or pate (maybe calling it pate makes it taste better :-) -
