Guest guest
Anne, I see this often at WIC that the amount of pumped milk is used as a reason for quitting. It has gotten somewhat easier since I have a peer counsler who has successfully bf. two children and has never been able to pump. I have always told moms that what they can pump is not a good indication of what the baby gets but was still amazed to watch this mom of a thriving 7 mo. old pump at work and get drops to a quarter of an ounce. Having her talk to moms can help but usually I think it's a fear of failure, a worry about how they are going to function when then need to rely on pumping because of work (or because they think it's a neccessity) or sometimes just an excuse. The other thing I have found usful is to have mom's watch the " Increasing Your Milk Video " on the Stanford site, which not only shows the technique of pumping with hand expression to get more milk, but even if the moms don't use that technique, they see moms pumping with really high grade pumps and gives a visual to what they are getting. Lastly, I spend a lot of time discussing pumping techniques because a lot of times moms are pumping sporadically and/or when their breasts feel full and wonder why they aren't getting good volumes.
