Lyla makes a really good point about renting vs. buying, particularly when you are just starting out and trying to keep costs low. However, this is assuming that you have or want to start a Medela account. If you start an account, it's also a high up front cost. Renting from an existing account instead can get pretty pricey in a short time, even with a long term rental price break.

When I got started, Tanita still owned the Medela re-branded Baby Weigh scale. I ordered the same scale from a medical supply company for half the price. The benefits are that you have something to show for your investment, plus it's considered a part of your capital equipment so you can depreciate it for several years.

Tanita sold that particular style to Medela, but they appear to have come out with a new baby scale that will function very similar (2 gram accuracy , memory function etc) along with a new output source for down loading weights. Below is a link to their online retailer, but you may be able to do a search to find it for less.

we rent medela scales (we rent many to families) and that is what we use both in our office and to carry to home visits. they are not very expensive to rent, and if you only need one for consults, would be pretty affordable i would think. the nice thing about renting is any mechanical issues are the responsibility of medela. and if any WHO code issues emerge (is this decided? anyone care to update?) they can be returned...

I am also very interested in this topic but I would like to add that afeature that would be useful for me (but perhaps not for HopeAllyson)would be that I could transport it without losing its calibration. Asa midwife, a good scale can perform double duty for births andlactation consultation.I'm pretty surprised at the price of the BabyWeigh. I imaginecomparable scales are similarly priced. Also, it would be mypreference not to purchase a Medela product new at this point due totheir current WHO code status. Thanks, Gerboth, IBCLC, LLLLOn Sun, Nov 9, 2008 at 3:04 PM, HopeAllyson Dwiggins<hadwigginsibclcgmail> wrote:> Hello all,>> I am starting up my private practice and I am looking for a scale. Re: Scale purchase

**Hi Lyla,

and if any WHO code issues emerge (is this decided? anyone care to update?) they can be returned...

**Difficult issue, this WHO-code-stuff... :-s In the Netherlands, all 'support points' (pumps and sets in commission, percentage of turnover) will be closed and changed into 'rental points' or 'selling points' (where I have to buy everything: higher margin, but bigger investment and more risk). I was at VELB/ILCA in Vienna and got brochures from another company, but it's hard to compare all the different qualities, as every company will of course say their product is great/best/super/code-compliant... I wish I could turn to a really independent person/organisation, to explain all the differences to me!

Anyway, like Myr on Lactnet said: the Freestyle campaign is not very bf-supportive. Just got their brochure last week and another one last month on several different topics, and I'm definitely going to send a mail to the IBCLC in the Dutch Medela team. I'll give some feedback, but if they want more information and suggestions for improvements, they're gonna have to pay me... That is weird, too, though: asking for money from a company you want to comment on... Then again, if they agree with my suggestions and it causes a discussion within the company, then it's no more than reasonable that I get paid. I won't spend several hours on suggestions that might bring *them* more money, but me none whatsoever... Any thoughts with all of you, on issues like these...?

Bye,

nne

Hi All,

The Medela scale with the pre/post-feed weigh feature is made by the

Tanita company. When I bought mine 5 years ago, it was called the

BLB-12 scale. I bought mine directly from Tanita at about half the

price of the Medela one.
