Re: Prescribing and LC in PP Conference

I think we make a lot of problems for ourselves. Jan and Nice

have both repeatedly stated on LN that suggesting zinc for wound

healing, herbs for milk supply, a homeopathic remedy for mastitis or

foods for mom's general good health are NOT prescribing and yet the

argument arises again and again. Usually with folks coming down on the

misinformed side of things and making life a tight wire walk for the

rest of us.

As I said, I do not beat around the bush.If I do, the mom is not going

to feel confident in my suggestions. I tell moms " this is what I

suggest to my clients b/c I have found that it works... " . They can talk

to someone else for something else. Every time an LC behaves as if she

cannot make these suggestions, she adds fuel to the fire that implies

we are doing something wrong. I think sometimes LCs who might not know

how to use any of these modalities can be insecure about their

availability to moms --perhaps more often among those in the medical

setting who might have less personal authority over their practice.

But, as practitioners in PP, I think this is the very unique piece we

can bring to the table. When we offer something more than anyone else,

we do an enormous service to families, while also offering a

significant point of difference from the institutional-based

practitioner. I personally would like to see all IBCLCs in PP using

holistic modalities. I believe our outcomes would improve and our

clients would shift their own thinking about health and well-being in a

very positive way.

That said, I have become quite passionate about creating ways to teach

this to other IBCLCs. I have a couple of projects underway, but am

more than willing to explore other avenues. I have often thought of

teaching at the PP Conference, but have never been able to find any

info on how to submit a proposal. I have always wanted to teach a

workshop on effective intake to IBCLCs, b/c I think it is a skill many

LCs do not innately have and it can take time to learn. But, obviously

teaching about practicing holistically is my first interest.
