Hi Leigh Anne!

I would concur with Lyla about follow up and wt check in 2-3 days but things sound as if they are going in the right direction. I know what you mean about questions go around in your head, it happens all the time to me. I always feel better with daily follow up and telling mom to compare the feeding wt feed with others, even though still a ballpark estimate of what's actually consumed by baby. I emphasize feeding frequency and joke with moms using something I heard on Lactnet, I think, a long time ago: "when in doubt, whip it out." This always gets a chuckle, good for mom to do more of, and I always preface it with the statement that "this is a bit of a crude saying.." Depending on mom's need to have specific guidelines for this I give examples of nurse for hiccups, nurse 10 min (or whatever time) post feed to ease babe to sleep, nurse for dessert, appetizer, to organize a fussy baby, and so forth. Then moms really get it.

Likely the slow start and duration limitation impacted this dyad and s-t-s, nursing often and long enough will keep them doing well. And following your gut instinct to not panic mom is likely a good one. It'll be a relief when baby's consistently gaining, especially for you, at least that's how I feel with situations like this.

One additional thought, when there's weighing and positioning and latch practice I find it takes more time for feeding and sometimes baby doesn't feed as well with the interruptions, thus the 1.7 oz intake, perhaps.

Hi All,

I have been enjoying and learning from everyone's comments.

I would like a little feedback - I am having one of those LC vs LLLL conversations in my head.

I just saw a mom - 9 day old baby - took in 1.7 oz during a period of 45-50 minute period - combination of both breasts in a couple of different positions. Mom had been limiting feedings to about 10 minutes per side for a couple of days per midwife not wanting her to overuse and damage nipples. At worst nipples were tender for a day or so. Now feedings are comfortable. Baby didn't poo for a couple of days - in the last 24 hours has had 3 yellow poos. Baby is up 4 oz from 5 days ago.

I think things were a bit slow to begin and are now catching up.

I have seen some sluggish babies lately and don't want to stress this mom unnecessarily. I really think they are doing well.

She is a real type A - in the good way - she likes to take clear notes and log everything. I left her with suggestion that she continue to keep good records and watch for the pees and poos and happy baby.

From using a scale so much with struggling babies I was hoping to see more milk. However, I saw a lovely content (not sluggish, not dehydrated baby.)

Do you hear the conversation going on in my head 'they are fine" they should pump to make sure baby gets enough" etc, etc,

Any thoughts?

they sound fine to me!! i'd say a follow up weight and recommendation to feed at early cues with no limits, and i'd think things are right on track!

1.7 is not bad, especially assuming this baby gets more at some feedings - and depending on weight - and frequency of feeds, it might be plenty!
