Peg,

Don't feel bad, hon, cuz I have these same 2 problems!! I can't reach to wipe

either. My rehab doc got me a personal shower hose thingy. . . it's just like

the one you use in the shower, only on a smaller scale. It attaches to the

sink faucet. And it's a God-send!! The only time I really have a problem now is

when I have to go and I'm out of the house, like at a restaurant or something.

Then I'm stuck. . .

As for the tub, I have a heck of a time getting in and out; can't lift my

legs up high enough to get over the side of the tub. And if I do manage to get

up

from the bottom after a bath, I can't guarantee that my arthritic knees will

hold me up. Can you get a shower chair? I have one, and I use it, but I like

to soak in hot water. . . hard for me, tho, like I said. And I can't stand up

long enough to take a shower. So I sit in the shower chair and use the

hand-held shower hose thingy.

Hi, Peg --

They just don't get it. I don't think it's possible to really understand

how we live unless you have to do it. I don't get depressed often... I

think that's partly because I'm a very optimistic, positive person, and

partly because I have an outstanding counselor. I don't think we're born

equipped to deal with the life we've been handed, but there's help out

there. You may have to interview a few therapists to find a good match, but

it's worth the work.

Shower: Bath bench. I absolutely love my bath bench. I'm a fairly large

woman, so I got the one that's rated for, like, five hundred pounds or

something. And I have a fairly small shower, and it still fits.

As for the other... big people have been dealing with that issue for a

while. A fair number of people who are prone to weight gain (and I don't

mean an extra 25 pounds) also have rather short arms... talk about a nasty

combination! So there are a couple of alternatives. One is a " portable

bidet " , you can see that at www.amplestuff.com. The other is... " reach

extenders " , designed specifically for that purpose, you can see them at

www.supersizeworld.com/hygiene.htm. I've shopped at both of those sites,

and have found them to be reliable. Not the cheapest places around, but

they've got a good selection.

Both of those sites have other stuff that you may find useful; whether you

can't bend because of pain, or because of a round body, the end result is

the same. They've got stuff to help you clip toenails, put on socks, pick

up stuff off the floor, put lotion on your back... look around.

(my only connection to those two sites is as a customer)

Hope that helps...

HI. can you get a hose that can be put on the sink so that you could turn

it on and use the water to clean yourself off. I know they have them b/c I

had to get one to clean my cat and to help me get water into the baby bath tub

when mY kids were young. It is just a rubber hose that is long. Hope this

helps and I know what you are going through.

You can also do a search on home health care items..... They have plenty

useful things....have them send a catalog.....I didn't see anything that

required a license.
