hi,

i have had both type of kidney stone procedures done. they have taken out

the kidney stone first and then put a stent in to keep it open till the swelling

etc goes away so the tube from the kidney itself doesnt close. the stent is

really uncomfortable and when they remove it they do that in the doc office

not the hospital and that is so painful.

The lithotripsy was done on me when the stone was to large to pass and

was still stuck in the kidney itself. Even after breaking it up they put a

stent in to keep things open afterwards. Again it is removed in the doc office

after the stent has been in for about a week. My dad however had the

lithotripsy done and they were unable to get the stone crushed during that

procedure

and he still ended up having to pay after his insurance paid their part of it.

He ended up having to go back and have kidney surgery (incision) to get the

stone out. Lithotripsy's are so so very expensive it is unreal.

There is what they call a mobile unit, a bus, a small hospital room/set

up on this vehicle that travels around hospitals in the state (this is my

experience in NC). They hook up to the hospital and then they wheel you out to

the unit on a stretcher after you have been sedated. There is a laser unit on

that vehicle and that is where they do the procedure.

hope you feel better, kidney stones are very painful.
