Guest guest
O.K. I'm admitting to being totally clueless. Could someone please tell me what these things are (hypernicum, homeopathic, oil, rhus tox)? Where do you buy them? What form do they take? Are they ingested or applied? How much? And how did you learn of these things in the first place? If anyone has time to explain, I'd be grateful and imagine there are others on this list who feel the same way. Thank you. Anne Grider Re: OT--shingles Dee, To 's hypernicum, homeopathic and the oil, I'd add rhus tox which is a remedy for chicken pox and same virus. I had a friend who had shingles and only use the rhus I recommended and both the rash and pain cleared within a couple of days. Barbara Latterner In a message dated 11/19/2008 3:22:46 P.M. Last night she started acyclovir, 5x/day, for 7 days. This may shorten the attack, but I'm under the impression it won't do anything for her pain, which I've been told can last for months. Do any of you know any herbal or homeopathic suggestions for easing the pain of shingles? Thanks! Dee Kassing One site has it all. Your email accounts, your social networks, and the things you love. Guest guest
Anne, Sorry, when I wrote, I was thinking it was the bf herbal site. Hypernicum, rhus tox are homeopathic remedies (small pellets usually that one places under the tongue for quick absorption). Hypernicum oil is just that a homeopathic oil that works topically, like arnica, a gel, cream or ointment for bruising, trauma. You can google homeopathy or go to site like ABC homeopathy, or go to MEchell 's site, birthandbreastfeedingonline.com and click on homeopathy and she explains what it is. Basically, homeopathy is based on the "like cures like" but homeopathics are only molecules of an herbal substance and they stimulate the body to heal itself. I learned about homeopathy thru self study after my homebirth midwife suggested its use. So more than 19 yr ago with my third child I began to use it and have found it to be extremely powerful for infants, children, adults. You but them at most health food stores or online. if you've other questions feel free to email me privately. I can later send you some resources, if you like. The beauty of homeopathics are there are no side effects for mom/baby or whoever. Very safe. Barbara Latterner, BSN, RN, IBCLC O.K. I'm admitting to being totally clueless. Guest guest
Anne, Hypernicum, rhus tox are just a couple of homeopathic remedies, amongst hundreds to choose from, for specific symptoms/illnesses. Homeopathic remedies are easily found these days at any health food store, and a lot of national food chains that have a whole foods section now carry them. Finding brochures or pamphlets explaining the basics of handling, dosing and storing are also easier to find than in the 'old days'. Usually, they're offered in tablet or pellet form, sometimes through a naturopathic physician, they are offered in granules. I have received a couple of remedies that were in tincture form. In any form, they dissolve so quickly in the mouth, that even dosing a newborn, say, for a bad case of jaundice, poses no risk of choking. I find that information about homeopathics is much more readily available than it was 20 years ago, and more people in the medical profession are understanding and more accepting of their use than when i was just starting out. Apparently, though, more people want to learn, as i had a few young moms in my support group last week asking about them and wanting to learn more, and here i thought EVERYONE knew about this stuff by now, LOL! You're not clueless! :-) Many of us have been challenged in the past with our own personal health issues, where we felt compelled to look outside the conventional model we were raised with, and that's where things like homeopathy come to light, right - kind of like why some of us are now lactation consultants? I'd bet most all of us have a personal story of trial and tribulations as new moms that brought us to this field - or am i in the minority here? Wow, that was a sudden shift of topic, LOL! Probably too much caffeine this afternoon - which, btw, antidotes homeopathic remedies! There, I brought it back around! Hope this helps a little bit! Sincerely, Burgett, IBCLC Spokane, WA > > O.K. Guest guest
Ladies, Thanks so much to all who responded. Looks like I have a bit of reading to do. Guess I wasn't as completely clueless as I thought, however - I've recommended fenugreek & blessed thistle or More Milk Plus or More Milk Special Blend to mothers for many years when they were already doing everything else to increase a milk supply. Guest guest
It's useful to maintain the distinction between herbal medicine and homeopathy, which are two very different approaches. Herbal medicines, like conventional pharmaceuticals, contain chemically active substances. Classic homeopathic medicines are prepared through a series of dilutions, with a special shaking technique at each dilution, which is thought to somehow maintain some essence or vital force of the original substance, which is generally no longer chemically present in the extremely diluted end product.
