Kathy: My Mom recently started Risperdal and I have noticed the

hallucinations have gotten worse and more frightful. Previously, most

of the hallucinations were happy ones. Risperdal is not the best drug

for LBD.

However, I have read (through this group) that it does work for some. I

am planning on talking to her doctor on Saturday about switching to

Seroquel. Also, since your Dad is not sleeping during the night, but is

during the day, you might was to talk to your doctor about timing when

the medication is given.

I will let you know if we change to Seroquel and how it works.

hallucinations and getting worse

My father has LBD and was how I have heard so many of you describe

it. He is lucid most of the time and then he will start having more

hallucinations and staying awake at night and then going back to being

lucid. My mother developed Shingles about a month ago and he started

hallucinating more and is starting to be more confused. Doesn't know

how to put his pants on, forgot how to butter his toast etc. He is

staying awake all night more and hallucinating alot. My mom has him

starting back on the respidal again (at first it seemed to work now

not so sure). The respidal is making him sleep all day. Just

wondering if my mom being sick has anything to do with this new

behavior.

Also curious what meds are common for this. My father takes respidal

and one of the new meds for alzheimers. He shakes really bad and they

said some of the meds could be some of the problem.

I believe in my mother's situation resperidal made everything worse.

Maybe it was b/c it was combined by 2 other new meds or along w/ even

other meds. But resperidal was the med that the doctors initially said

effected her gait. She went from shuffling, to freezing, to weakness,

to wheelchair. At the time they said it was temporary until she got

used to the drugs. She never walked since. At the time she wasn't

diagnosed with LBD - I believe resperidal led to her decline. IMHO...

We went thru a series of " Med adjustments " some more diasterous than

others. we found for my dad that the SEROQUEL helped in calming the

hallucinations. Two things to be aware of : 1. it takes a gradual

adjustment to find the right amount and number of times to give it

2. they may be quite sleepy in the beginning till their bodies

adjust to the seroquel. When he was strong and the hallucinations

made him uncontrollable at times he was given Seroquel in the am

(upon waking); 1pm and 5pm The key is to get the seroquel in BEFORE

the agitation sets in... Good Luck This group is fabulous with

suggestions and warnings..
