La Leche League of MD/DE/DC Healthcare Provider Seminar“Real Women Breastfeed: Understanding Today’s Challenges” Friday, March 7, 2008 Columbia Hilton Hotel, Columbia, MD Speakers: Gromada, MSN, RN, IBCLC Barbara Behrmann, PhD Liz , JD, IBCLC The needs of babies and the life-affirming act of breastfeeding remain constant, even as women’s roles, occupations, expectations and struggles have changed in recent decades. Healthcare providers must understand, not just the mechanics of lactation, and the tools available, but the hurdles that women face in making breastfeeding part of their varied lives, within a society where breastfeeding is not yet the norm. Recognizing this need, La Leche League of MD/DE/DC will offer a full-day seminar focused on the emotional insight and practical skills that health professionals need to help breastfeeding mothers overcome these challenges. Speaker Gromada, MSN, RN, IBCLC ‘s presents two sessions. She will explores using tools and any needed supplementary feeding methods to support breastfeeding. Then, more broadly, she will discuss practical, solution-oriented approaches to often complex breastfeeding problems, encouraging health-care providers to meet the breastfeeding mother where she is, to reinforce the mother’s strengths and minimize provider bias. Speaker Barbara Behrmann, PhD., wove together a rich tapestry of mothers' stories in her new book The Breastfeeding Café., In her presentation “What Women Don’t Tell Their Healthcare Providers,” she uses storytelling and insightful analysis to help HCPs understand the challenges new mothers face breastfeeding in a bottle-feeding culture, and how birth interventions, routine hospital practices and poor health advice can undermine breastfeeding. She will also discuss psychological and personal issues that can affect the breastfeeding experience. Liz , JD, IBCLC, combines her legal

expertise with her work as a private practice and hospital-based lactation consultant to overview the legal and ethical issues that HCPs may face in helping breastfeeding mothers. Her clear language cuts through an often complex tangle of issues of liability, privacy and responsibility, leavening the presentation with topic with brisk humor. 1.5 E-CERPs . 6 CERPs for IBCLCs, have been approved through a providership with the Eastern Division of La Leche League International with the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners. “La Leche League International is an approved provider of continuing nursing

education by the Illinois Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center ’s Commission on Accreditation. This activity will offer a maximum of 6 Contact Hours for RNs from that accrediting body.”
