Our LOs will appear to have days or even hours to live, then rebound to a much more functional state. What some people are referring to as last stages are evidence that their LOs bodies are shutting down. Hospice has some good booklets about this. Then, on the other hand, they can suprise us entirely. Dad fed himself at dinner (after we cut the meat), talked his normal random talk, walked with his walker when the caregiver came to put him to bed, and passed away in his sleep. No warning other than some odd, frantic-type activity the 2 days before his passing. The only " truth " is that our LOs don't " get better. " They rebound some, but usually not to the point they were before.
