Guest guest
Just a ?--How did 's GI system shut down? My little one, , is 2 1/2 now. He was diag. failure to thrive at about 10 mos, when he started losing weight, and his stomach just stopped emptying--the first clue was when we had to do an MRI, adn they had to pump his little stomach--he had not eaten (and at that point , he was exclusively breastfed) for 15hours.....we soon introduced solids, and mixed formula powder with it to help him gain weight (he was born 10#, and could not get past 16#--same weight since 6mos of age). Well, then we started with reflux--his stomach would just push it right back out. And we could see exactly which meals had not been digested--usually 2 or 3. However, he usually acted hungry, and eagerly ate. Weird. Does this sound familiar? My immuno. is expecting him to present a pid in the next several years, so i am assuming this is related. He also had sensory integration problems, and a major speech delay. He was also hypotonic, which they felt could have affected his GI system. He is fine now, si and speech, and motor skill-wise, but i havent' had to pull out bigger clothes in some time, so i'm growing concerned again that his growth has plateaued. Any suggestions? Thank you, sorry to bring up a non-pumpkin. Wesley is improving, but not really well. What else is new??? maurita, mom to Welsey, sel. iga def, andrew, samuel, and ? ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Guest guest
Hi, We had another wicked weekend here. Jamey's GI symtoms are all escalating. Has anyone ever noticed a " coffee grind " texture in their child's diareah? Is there an explanation for this? Thanks!

I drove to the University to pick up hemacult cards late Monday afternoon. Of course, Jamey didn't have anymore movements the rest of Monday or Tuesday. Tuesday night, at about 1 a.m., he began screaming in pain. I couldn't figure out what was wrong--he had one of the worst autistic fits I've ever encountered. We are both covered with bruises from the pinching and hitting. His room was a battle field until 3:30 in the morning. Jamey is never like this--he is so sweet and lovable. He definitely had severe pain somewhere. He slept most of the day today and was fine until tonight--then the diarrhea started again. I called his GI at Mayo on Monday--he's out of town until March 12, but he's supposed to call in this week. I'm hoping he'll refer Jamey on to one of his colleagues. In the meantime, he sees the Immunologist tomorrow and will be having his IVIG infusion after. Never thought I'd say this, but I can't wait. Seems like once the antibodies are infused, everything gets better. Interestingly enough, we can tell when his antibody levels drop...his stools turn to water, reflux worsens, and cold sores break out. This usually occurs at 1 1/2 weeks after the infusion (we are still going every 2 weeks). The immunologist wants him to reach a healthier plateau so she can start " exogenous T cell cytokines. " I have no clue what this is--I'm hoping she'll explain it tomorrow. I think Jamey has even blown the immunologist away. She currently has close to 100 autistic kids in her study. Most have over active immune systems. Only a handful are immune depressed....None as severe as Jamey. I think he's invented his own category. I hope that YOU are feeling better. Nothing worse than feeling under the weather and taking care of a sick kid. That alone is enough to zap one's energy. Thanks for all you do maintaining the list and passing on all the great information. I know I'm usually pretty quiet, but I want you to know that your efforts have made a tremendous difference in helping me understand things. Sincerely,
