I'm beginning to think we have some pig-headed dairy cows. If the grain mix isn't up to their standards they won't even come to the gate the next milking. Hi Becky: Acres, U.S.A. would be a good source for books on eco-agriculture. From " The Albrecht Papers " , for instance, you can learn that animals select their food according to the soil fertility, not according to the particular forage you choose to grow. You can also learn that corn is a fattening food, at its best. Albrecht talks about " go " foods and " grow " foods. Corn is a " go " food. It's the " grow " foods that require the higher soil fertility, not the " go " foods. The farmer I buy my milk from feeds his cattle nothing but grass. When not on pasture, they only get hay, no supplements. His average veterinary bill is about US$.31/cow/year. If you wonder who Albrecht is, I suggest reading the " Forward to Supplement " and Chapter 23 of " Nutrition and Physical Degeneration " by Weston Price. Both are by Albrecht.
