Guest guest
Hello! My name is DeeAnn and I am new to this group. My son is 10 and has OCD, as well as many anxiety disorders. I have a question, and was wondering if you could help? I am requesting my son be put on the Student Study Team, as well as have a 504 plan, and behavior plan in place for the new school year. He begins school August 14th. Do you have any helpful information or websites that help me with the process? This is all new for me and I want to make sure my son has everything in place to help him to be successful. Thanks for you time, DeeAnn

Guest guest
Hi DeeAnn. My daughter is in high school and has bipolar, severe anxiety and OCD. I am not sure what would apply to your son since he is younger, but let me know if you would like me to share with you some things in my daughter's plan. The most helpful thing for her has been having a safe person and safe place. Stormy 504 Plan Hello! My name is DeeAnn and I am new to this group. Guest guest
Hi DeeAnn, I believe in the FILES section of this group there is a really good document about School and OCD. To prepare for the 504, think about how your son's diagnoses affect him at school. Does he struggle to do work or to read or write, etc. Does he have trouble concentrating. Does doing schoolwork take twice as long as for a typical/average student. Does he get frustrated easily, how he shows this, what can be done to prevent, etc. The best way for teacher/others to respond to outbursts or prevent them. Some kids will have in their Plan a " safe place " to go if they need to leave the classroom; it could be the library or to someone they feel okay going to. So they are allowed to leave the room; might have a signal or question to say to teacher to alert teacher they need to leave. Some accommodations and modifications we've used, and others I've just read about: Extra time allowed for home & classwork; no penalty for turning in late. Extra time for tests (no time limit). Write short answers, incomplete sentences (like for answering chapter questions or other homework) Get copy of teacher notes (as opposed to taking notes themselves). If struggling socially, school may have some type program that helps with this. May have homework modified. Less questions to do, for example, or less math problems.... ---- Just have in mind where you feel he has problems in school, like above, and teachers may have suggestions but you may want to have some ideas also. I wanted the extra time for turning in my son's work (and he was allowed to bring classwork home) but I know for some things I drew a " blank " for what to do and would ask the 504 team what suggestions they had, etc. I always let them suggest first. With OCD kids often fall apart at home after holding it back at school. So homework can be very stressful some nights, and for my son we sometimes couldn't complete it or even start it. And keep in mind (or remind teachers) that each year the workload will be more (more reading, more writing...) and what supports/services he can get now will help to prepare him for the higher grades and to get him successfully (and hopefully liking school) through this year. Just some quick thoughts. > > > Hello! My name is DeeAnn and I am new to this group. My son is 10 and > has OCD, as well as many anxiety disorders.
