Guest guest
Nope, no strep. After doing some reading though, I see that she had symptoms for a long time that just went unnoticed. Sincle July 1 we have had about 5 ER visits, one by ambulance because of hives/panic/not being able to breath. The last ER visit was because she pictured a knife going into her chest, she wasn't able to get away from the thought so it went further to picturing herself putting the knife in her chest. Her thoughts then urged her to find a knife, though she really didn't want to do it. She was completely freaked out by the urge. I have not noticed any physical rituals, but that does not mean she is not doing them. She does a lot of repeating in her head. wrote: Hi Kathy, welcome! My son's OCD began at age 11 too, start of 6th grade. He's 19 now. This group is a great support. Have you looked at the OCD Foundation website yet? Good place to read about proper therapy for OCD. Let us know how the psychologist appointment goes. With abrupt onset of OCD, it always makes us parents curious as to whether she was sick recently, perhaps with strep? There is a type of OCD that begins that way called PANDAS. I said " type " but the behaviors aren't any different, LOL, just that it begins due to the illness. > > Hi all. > > My 11 year old daughter was recently diagnosed after a about a month of > some intense symptoms. Guest guest
Hi Kathy. My daughter has obsessive thoughts only ~ no physical rituals also. My daughter gets these obsessive/morbid thoughts either in an image or just a thought but usually not both at the same time. They tend to switch back and forth and rarely together. My daughter's main thought is of hanging herself. OCD shows her hooks, bars, rope, etc. There is no beginning and no end, just the image of these items and the thought that she will hang herself even though she doesn't want to kill herself. Recently this switched to thoughts about hurting myself and my husband and then switched to hurting our cats. She has never had all these thoughts at the same time <--thank God. Someone on the boards here recommended a really good book for this type of OCD. It's called " Imp of the Mind " . This book deals with obsessive thoughts more than other OCD books do but keep reading everything you can about it. Let us know how you make out with the doctor. Guest guest
Thanks Bj! 4 1/2 years here, just a baby! The tools acquired those 4 years have been an immense help the last few weeks. Not only have they helped me, but I have been able to compare my " recovery " to her " recovery " and she is not only able to understand it, she has hope because of it. svdbyhislove wrote: Welcome, Kathy. I saw already mentioned PANDAS. That was my thought too, when you mentioned that it came on out of the blue and was intense. OCD can be overwhelming and stressful for the whole family. But, getting the correct type of therapy CBT/ERP can help immensely. It made a big difference for our son, who tried traditional talk therapy for years with no success. 22 years sober here. Glad you found us. It's a great, caring group, where you can vent, share, and find great info.
