Welcome Grandma ;0)

Glad that you found us! It is so refreshing to see a grandparent so involved

with her grandchild. Everyone here is very supportive and more than happy to

help.

I wish that I could pull up a web address at the moment but it's my bedtime and

I'm not quite awake, lol. Google OCD and many sites will come up. Also, have

your granddaughter's parents ask their pediatrician for a recommendation. They

can also call their health insurer and ask them for assistance. You can also

poke around the posts and find some useful links.

I personally have found the web to be an incredibly useful tool. Sorry that I'm

in a rush at the moment but have no fear because other awesome members will

reply to you.

Again, welcome.

Professional Help

This is my first message as a member so I'll give a brief explanation

of why I am a member. My 5 year old Granddaughter " Abby " has been

recently diagnosed with OCD by a Psychologist. Our family has known

that something was different with Abby since she was about one year

old. She's gone through a lot of different issues such as night

terrors, hording, repeating, fears, etc. The family doctor even had a

specialist run an EEG on her. As Abby got older her symptoms (actions)

became clearly that of OCD. It's actually been such a relief to have a

name for what she has and to have it confirmed by a specialist. Our

problen is that this particular psychologist does not treat OCD. We

can't seem to find any help in their area. We purchased books and

workbooks but I really feel that Abby needs professional help. She is

extremely smart and has a great sense of humor but we worry everytime

she is left with anyone other than family. She starts kindergarten this

Fall. Does anyone know where to get professional help for child OCD in

Oregon? They live in Eugene Oregon.

Thank you, from a very concerned Grandma.

Hi. Welcome, . . .So glad you found us.

I live in Washington, about half way between Seattle, Washington, and

Portland, Oregon. I looked for a qualified therapist in both cities

because there wasn't anyone closer to us, and both drives were about

the same amount of miles for us.

Below is a list from the OCFoundation website of providers in Oregon,

that might be helpful. I think Corvallis is closest for you, isn't

it? I have relation in Eugene, and thought that was the closest one

listed, to Eugene.

It's good you've been reading about OCD, so you will know what to look

for in a therapist. CBT, including ERP is a must. Be sure to call

any therapists you are interested in and ask for a consultation over

the phone. If they do not treat kids, only adults, ask for referrals

of someone who does specialize in the treatment of OCD that treats kids.

Some of these (listed) are anxiety clinics, which is good because OCD

is an anxiety disorder and they treat it also.

Another option is to find an OCD support group, locally. Ask them for

referrals too. They often know of the good psychiatrists and

therapists in the area.

From the list below. . I personally talked to Ricks Warren and

McLellarn. They both were really understanding and seemed to know how

to treat OCD successfully. I also talked to Tom Dooley. I would

steer clear of him though. If you want to know why, you can write me

personally.

Don't be surprised if you have to commute a bit. It is only the

really, really lucky ones who seem to find qualified help close by.

And we found many do not work with insurance companies either.

Having said that, I have to say, therapy helped our son tremendously.

It is worth the drive and money to find someone who knows what they

are doing.

Best of luck.
