Guest guest
Jordana, my dd has OCD in addition to bipolar. I noticed you had mentioned something as not being OCD and I wondered what you think of something my dd does. She sometimes gets stuck, where she can't make her mind move on. For instance, she may be at school doing Calc and she can't switch to the next subject, say French. She insists that we don't understand, she can't switch her mind from what her mind is telling her to do, like switch subjects. It makes her totally freak out. Would you think that is an OCD thing or not? Thanks, Stormy Subject: Re: A quick update and request for suggestions To: Date: Friday, August 8, 2008, 4:35 PM Does have Aspergers? OCD doesn't mean having an obsessional interest. Is he seeing a therapist who could help him to understand that he will not be getting this gift? Can you explore with him what gift besides Rent would be a good one, explaining that we all have dream gifts we'd like but can't afford to get. Boy do I have plenty!!!! A quick update and request for suggestions Hi, all! Although I have not written in a while I continue to read posts and think of you all as I do so. I want to encourage those of you struggling with new onsets/diagnosis of OCD. My , now 19, has had a couple of very good years after some very dark ones where I thought he would literally not survive. I relate to those of you who are beside yourselves not knowing what to do. But, as others have said, while OCD is always on the back burner there is hope for periods of normalcy. My daughter's doctor has been weaning her off of her zoloft (she has selective mutism, anxiety and some OCD tendencies). She did okay until just lately, now at half her former dose. She is getting " shy " around strangers again -- the other night she would not talk to a waiter to order food for i nstance)and is saying she is afraid again about things like criminals and even going to our laundry area alone. So I think we will be going back up in doseage. 's new obsession is the play " Rent. " He has listened to the soundtrack about a million times and written down all the words to all the songs and has it memorized. I took him to see a traveling troupe perform it a few months ago. BUT his birthday is in two weeks and the only thing he wants is a trip to Broadway to see it before it closes on Sept. 7. (oh, is that all you want?) I am afraid he is going to be sorely disappointed and maybe relapse or have a breakdown. But for him to travel, see the play, stay in a hotel, and eat, that would be like a $1,000+ birthday gift. (which is out of the question financially and I would not send him alone.) I have been trying to prepare him for NOT receiving this gift but he seems to be sure he is getting it! Does anyone have any suggestions on getting his mind " un-stuck " from this? I would not be opposed to the whole idea if it was do-able, but it is not affordable or practical. He says it is his " only wish " that will make his life complete. YIKES! Any ideas would help a lot! Thanks for listening. This is a great group -- you " newbies " have found a treasure! Guest guest
I vote OCD. The mind getting stuck and not being able to move on, is classic OCD. Guest guest
Truthfully, I have no idea. Â What I was referring to about the other child is that because OCD has the word obsession in its name, people sometimes get the idea that being obsessed with a topic is part of it. Â This is not true. A quick update and request for suggestions Hi, all! Although I have not written in a while I continue to read posts and think of you all as I do so. Guest guest
OK, thanks Jordana. Sometimes it is hard to know what is a part of the disorder and what isn't. Guest guest
yes sanity... I agree...told my husband if his med didn't kick in soon I was going to need some of my own. I think you're on the right track, for your sanity, to remove the remotes until the med and therapy kicks in. **************One site keeps you connected to all your email: AOL Mail, Gmail, and Yahoo Mail.
