Guest guest
Hi, Stormy. Does she have a plan in place at school where she can be given time to make the switch? Our son did an exposure for decision making that really helped him speed up the process. Decision making is always tough for kids with OCD too. I suspect it is that needing to be 100% sure that the decision they are making is the correct one. . .Even with minor things. Our son agreed that he would only take one minute (cutting the time down as the exposure proceeded over time) to choose, not analyzing it to try to help with the decision. . Just choosing, right or wrong. He got much better at it. So, I wonder if your daughter was given time to feel she has finished up, but a limited amount of time, if it might help her. Then the time could be shortened as she proceeds. You could work on it at home, and see if the school could help you apply is there too, in some way. She could choose the amount of time to start with (within reason) that she feels she would need to make the transition. With our son, putting a time limit on decision making, and enforcing it, with his complete cooperation, helped him to learn to let it go easier. Just a thought. Is he seeing a therapist who could help him to understand that he will not be getting this gift? Can you explore with him what gift besides Rent would be a good one, explaining that we all have dream gifts we'd like but can't afford to get.
