Hi all

this is for a friend. i cant figure my own son out so i figure if i

help others do it i will find my answers.

OK, 11 year old girl who developed typically but always with sensory

issues. Diagnosed with central auditory processing disorder 2 years

ago and problems had been there at least a year before that. mom is

trying to see what " issues/behaviors " were present before this

diagnosis. apparently some of her language deficits were not

noticed because she had learned to read lips and had adapted herself

to fit in so to speak. I cant explain it to well, how and when her

regression started is still being figured out.

This child has a 2-4 year language delay (mostly receptive) and 2-4

year social skills delay. she is extremely verbal and has always

appeared of above average intelligence. Her mom is in the process

of taking her to an autism clinic for evaluation.

In the mean time mom has been to an ABA workshop and read everything

she can get her hands on and spoke with a consultant to come up with

some programs at home to address her needs until everything else

falls into place. She is trying to sort out behaviors, symptoms,

and how to address them and is looking for comments on how to deal

with these as well as parent analysis as to what these things mean,

are they symtoms of a diagnosis,OCD, attention issues, true

behaviors, etc so i am giving some examples for anyone who could

comment with their opinions an advice on how to react.

these are examples

1. this child hears you say " oh man! " and asks mom or others if she

is a man, over and over and then may be heard in the other room

saying " i am not a man, i am a girl, i am ___ "

2. you cough in one room and she is in another and she comes in to

repeatedly ask if you coughed on her

3. if you walk by her and brush against her she will ask over and

over if you got something on her

4. academics; when mom is helping her with math she continues to

forget from each time to next the difference between addition and

subtraction, will do one when she should do another and when

corrected will do it again a few minutes later, she will put the

wrong number on top or bottom even when prompted the moment before

5. when at the grocery store she picks up a candy bar from the next

isle over to where they are checking out and asks if it can be paid

for in that isle, mom repeatedly answers she can pay for it in the

isle they are in and still her daughter asks over and over, finally

getting angry and putting the candy back

sorry for the long post but since she is not getting much help yet,

except what she can find time to read, we thought this could help

her at least analyze these issues and think if they are symptoms of

the auditory processing disorder or what.

thanks
