Guest guest
Think it's time I introduce myself. I have been enjoying this Very Active list and learning sooooo much. Thank you all. I'll try to make it short. My name is Sonja Kepford and I and my family live in central Iowa. I was raised with a dear Adelle , vitamin guzzling mother who did her best according to her knowledge, which was not too bad for the time. I didn't learn much from her though, and from around 1979 or so, I had been eating a modified SAD (my husband and children also since 1988). (Modified in that I thought I was quite enlightened, baking my own bread, owning and using a Laurel's Kitchen cookbook here and there.) By 1995 I had gained quite a bit of weight with my two babies + one miscarraige. I was approx. 75 lbs overweight. I had crippling arthritis in one foot which had been damaged in a car accident back in '88, dizzy spells/blackouts, ringing ears, endometriosis/hysterectomy, and fungal skin problems galore, the last of which drove me to start asking around church (where there happened to be alot of " health conscious " people) what I could do. (One wonderful thing my mother did instil in me was a mistrust of modern medicine, and I am so thankful for that. ) The people at that church said one word: CANDIDA. I followed that diet + supplements and lost all the symptoms mentioned above, including the 75 lbs. I knew early on that nothing would ever be the same for me as far as food is concerned. After that, I dabbled with Atkins (finding it interesting...being so similar to the candida diet). I bought some old Adelle cookbooks, relearning what my mom knew. I was given a Zone book and found that interesting, and from there heard about the blood type diet and Paleo. I started making my own yogurt from local goat's milk (heating it of course). That milk supply came to an end and I despaired of buying the commercial stuff. Sso we all quit milk/yogurt. Then I started freaking out about meat too and the handling of it, the hormones, the quality.... Around that time I read a Dr. Norman book and started down the road to a sort of vegetarianism because it all sounded so clean: no need to worry about all those bad things, forgetting the info I had learned with Adelle, Atkins, Zone and the Paleo people regarding the importance of fats and protein. Though I lost the weight that I had wanted to (just a little), I started having horrible menstrual-related problems (I still have one ovary), my energy was shot, I was starting to get grey hairs. Then I met a lady who recommended NT to me as an interesting book. That was about a month ago and all kinds of puzzle pieces have been falling into place ever since. The menstrual-related problems seem to have gone away. I have tried many, many recipes in NT; most with great success. My family seems to be pleased with the new changes on the whole (except the sour taste in the breakfast oatmeal). We still don't have milk....but that is coming (goat). We still use commercial for everything else, but that will change. My biggest confusion now is the proper role grains should play in our diet, whether or not I should pay those high prices for Celtic sea salt, what I should do about going to the dentist (I need to have 5 fillings...I'll cost $70 for mercury or $3000 for the composite), and last, but not least...should I consider an EMF device now that I'm spending so much time at the computer reading the posts?!!! If you made it to here, you are truly a compassionate individual...and if you didn't, I don't blame you...I know you are all very busy people. That was as short as I could make it. Sincerely, Sonja Kepford
