All New Yorkers: Phone calls needed today to stop new mandatory Prevnar shots

for all NY School Children

Bills were sneaked through the Assembly (A 8761) and Senate (S 5794) that

would force NY school children to be the first children in the world to get

mandatory Prevnar shots to attend school. Senate Majority Leader ph Bruno

could stop this bill, but he needs to hear from you and he needs to hear from

you now.

Please call Senator Bruno's office at 518-455-3191 and ask firmly but

respectfully and politely that he not allow this legislation to go forward.

The bill had only two sponsors, Assembly Health Committee Chair

Gottfried and Senate Health Committee Chair Kemp Hannon, not a single other

memebr of either house would sign on as sponsors.

Please call Chairman Gottfried and Chairman Hannon and let them know that you

do not appreciate them using our children for guinea pigs for their pet

projects.

Here are some reasons why mandatory Prevnar is a really bad idea from a letter

activists sent several weeks ago:

I am writing to request that the New York Senate Rules Committee reject S

5794, a bill that would force all children in the State of New York to submit to

four injections of the pneumococcal vaccine (Prevnar). Prevnar is a product of

dubious safety and efficacy, and mandatory medical procedures are inconsistent

with basic American values. Further, there have no been no hearings or other

measures of any kind to inform the public of this measure or to solicit public

participation in this process. Nor has there been any analysis of the potential

public health effects of this proposal and the consequent fiscal impacts. We

hope that New York would look to California, Texas and other states which

considered, but rejected, mandatory pneumococcal shots.

Prevnar Created to Address Overuse of Antibiotics Pneumococcal disease is a

bacterial infection that can cause serious illness, including inflammation of

the brain, blood infections and pneumonia. The Prevnar vaccine manufactured by

Wyeth (formerly American Home Products Corporation) is the only pneumococcal

vaccine affected by S5794. It contains only 7 of the more than 90 strains of the

pneumococcal organism that causes disease in humans and cannot prevent

meningitis or blood infections caused by other strains.1Over-use of antibiotics

during the past quarter century has caused these 7 strains of the pneumococcal

organism to mutate into antibiotic resistant forms and these 7 strains are

contained in the Prevnar vaccine. Whether the Prevnar vaccine will place

pressure on the pneumococcal organism to develop vaccine-resistant strains or

make other strains of the bacteria more virulent is unknown.

Pneumococcal Ecology Has Already Adjusted to Prevnar, Studies have already

shown that the introduction of Prevnar into the human environment has result in

an increase in the 83 strains not affected by Prevnar. Continued misuse of

antibiotics and the rapid readjustment to the presence of Prevnar indicate that

it may well soon be obsolete.

Prevnar may be more dangerous than Pneumococcal disease, The CDC states that

pneumococcal infections cause approximately 700 cases of meningitis, 17,000

cases of blood stream infections and 200 deaths in American children under age

five every year, with 35 of these deaths being caused by pneumococcal

meningitis.2 Since the vaccine was licensed in 2000, there have been 3,243

Prevnar-related adverse events reported to the federal government Vaccine

Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), including 476 serious events and 79

deaths.3 Dr. Kessler, former head of the FDA under Presidents Clinton and

H. W. Bush, estimated that VAERS reported less than 10% of all the

serious adverse vaccine reactions.

New Yorkers Have No Right of Choice, Intelligent and responsible people who

evaluate a vaccine and decide that the medical benefits do not outweigh the

risks, or who do not have confidence that the information provided by the

vaccine manufacturer and federal agencies are credible evaluations, have no

right to refuse a vaccine in New York.

Flawed Clinical Trials Did Not Prove Safety: The authors of the primary

Prevnar safety test, Wyeth and Kaiser Permanente compared one experimental

vaccine (pneumococcal) against another (meningococcal)1, which seriously

compromised the scientific validity of the trial. Children in groups who got the

pneumococcal vaccine suffered more seizures, irritability, high fevers and other

reactions. There were 12 deaths in the Prevnar group, including 5 Sudden Infant

Death Syndrome (SIDS) deaths.

No Long-Term Studies: There are no long-term studies evaluating whether

Prevnar given alone or in combination with other vaccines is associated with

chronic illness or disability, such as the development of diabetes, asthma,

seizure disorders, learning disabilities, ADHD, or autism.

Prevnar will Cost New York more than $500 million. The four shot course of

Prevnar costs approximately $260, the cost for the approximately 2 million

school age children in New York will be approximately $500 million. More than

40% of New York’s schools children do not have health insurance these shots

will need to be provided by public entities at a cost of more than $200 million.

This enormous is more than twice the entire federal research budget for autism

Vaccine Components Not Thoroughly Evaluated: Each 0.5ml dose of Prevnar

contains 0.125 mg. of aluminum, a metal that is neurotoxic, and traces of

cyanide used in the production process. The vaccine manufacturer states that

" Prevnar has not been evaluated for any carcinogenic or mutagenic potential, or

impairment of fertility. " 4,1

Efficacy Low For Preventing Ear Infections: Despite the suggestion by the

manufacturer and Kaiser Permanente officials in pre-licensure press releases

that Prevnar vaccine is an ear infection vaccine, the vaccine has never been

licensed by the FDA to prevent ear infections. Clinical trials showed that the

vaccine decreases a child's chance of getting an ear infection by only 7

percent.5, 6

Prevnar May Interfere With Efficacy of Other Vaccines: The manufacturer product

insert indicates that when Prevnar is given at the same time as HIB, pertussis

and polio vaccines, it may lower the efficacy of those vaccines for some

children. There is no data on what happens when Prevnar vaccine is given in

combination with MMR or chicken pox vaccines.1

Voluntary Use of the Vaccine Is High: Wyeth, the CDC and AAP have done an

excellent job promoting the mass use of this vaccine by children. Prevnar topped

the sales charts as the number one best selling new pharmaceutical among all

pharmaceuticals brought on the market in the year 2000, generating $461 million

in sales.7 Voluntary uptake of the vaccine is so high that there are Prevnar

vaccine shortages and the CDC has at times revised its recommendations to urge

that only high risk groups of children should receive all four doses of the

vaccine.2 This experience shows that mandates are not needed.

Informed consent is the only basis for immunization programs consistent with

the values of a democracy. Please reject S 5794 there are no arguments to

justify this expensive, dangerous and ineffective proposal.

I just got off the phone w/ Hannon's, Gottfried's, Bruno's ( & a few other

assembly & senators offices), letting them know that I live in Albany county

(NY) & that I do not support these bills. I requested that they stop pushing

these bills through. I don't know what (if anything) it will do, but it is

really important that all of us at least show our elected officials what we

need/want them to do.
