He will be presenting two workshops for parents and professionals who wish to learn techniques to help individuals with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder acquire language and other critical learner skills FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 24TH, 2006 The Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills (The ABLLS) & SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 25TH, 2006 Designing, Implementing, and Trouble-Shooting Verbal Behavior Programs for Children with Autism Location: Tomball College Beckendorf Conference Center 30555 Tomball College Tomball, TX 77375 WORKSHOPS FOR PARENTS, SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS AND AIDES, SPEECH AND LANGUAGE PATHOLOGISTS, PSYCHOLOGISTS, BEHAVIOR ANALYSTS, SUPPORT COORDINATORS, ADMINISTRATORS, PEDIATRICIANS AND OTHER HUMAN SERVICE PROFESSIONALS Workshop 1 (Friday, February 24th) This introductory-level workshop is primarily geared for professionals and parents who have not had extensive experience in using the ABLLS. The ABLLS workshop will provide the participant with the tools to analyze and track learner skills and develop a comprehensive language-based curriculum for children. The Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills (The ABLLS), created by W. Partington, Ph.D. and Mark L. Sundberg, Ph.D., is an assessment tool, curriculum guide, and skills-tracking system used to help guide the instruction of language and critical learner skills for children with autism or other developmental disabilities. This powerful tool is now available to parents, teachers, speech pathologists, behavior analysts, and others who design, coordinate, and/or supervise language or skill-acquisition programs. With the ABLLS, you can precisely assess a child's repertoire of language and learning skills, as well as identify when, where, and how the skills are being used. It enables IEP goals and objectives to be clearly defined and helps in strategically targeting the learning needs of a student. The ABLLS allows you to pinpoint obstacles that have been preventing a child from acquiring new skills and begin to develop a comprehensive language-based curriculum. This workshop will provide essential information on scoring and interpreting the ABLLS as well as incorporate discussions, with examples, that will show you how to: q Perform skills analyses to determine a child's strengths and deficits. q Continually measure and monitor learning achievements using specially designed skill tracking grids q Utilize assessment results for evaluating priorities, determining IEP objectives, and developing curricula. Workshop 2 (Saturday, February 25th) The Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills (The ABLLS), based on Dr. Skinner's analysis of verbal behavior, provides a mechanism to analyze learner skills, develop a comprehensive language-based curriculum, and track skill acquisition for individuals with autism or other developmental disabilities. Once the assessment is completed on a learner, it is important to develop a strategic teaching plan (IEP) that will guide the intervention to produce the most effective outcomes. However, program teams frequently find that they are successful in developing certain skills but are ineffective in developing other skill areas. Skill acquisition is dependent upon trainers' ability to identify not only what skills need to be taught, but also how motivational issues are directly related to the implementation of the teaching strategies. This workshop is designed to provide individuals who are familiar with the ABLLS with skills to analyze problems with the development of certain skill areas (e.g., spontaneous use of language and social interactions skills) and to provide individuals who are responsible for the development of programs with strategies for addressing those problems. Discussions regarding the analysis of problems in the acquisition of skills, evaluation of educational priorities, and determination of IEP objectives for several students will be conducted. During this workshop, participants will review data from students' ABLLS assessments, review proposed learning objectives, and observe videotapes of learner skills. The video reviews will include both early phases of assessment and intervention, and later phases of treatment interventions. Pre- and post-ABLLS scores of the learners' performance will be reviewed. Specific learner objectives for developing effective teaching strategies using students' data from The Assessment of Basic Language and Learner Skills (The ABLLS): q Participants will be able to identify at least two common problems that are related to the failure of students to make adequate progress in the development of critical learner skills. q Participants will be able to identify how motivational issues are related to the acquisition of language skills. q Participants will be able to describe how social reinforcement variables are related to the development of spontaneous verbal behavior. q Participants will be able to identify how directly shape critical social interaction skills. Location The workshops will be held at Tomball College, Beckendorf Conference Center, 30555 Tomball College, Tomball, TX 77375.
