The Basics of ABA/ VB

May 5 & 6, 2006

8:30-3:30 pm

This 2 day workshop is designed for educators, instructional assistants,

TSS's, ABA-VB therapists, related services professionals, behavior analysts,

parents, and anyone else who works with a student with autism or other

developmental disability interested in setting up a ABA/VB program and

programming from the ABLLS. The intent of this workshop is to facilitate

staff development and sustained professional growth so that the necessary

supports for personnel may exist and FAPE can be ensured for all learners.

This workshop is based upon the principles of applied behavioral analysis

and B.F. Skinner?s 1957 publication of Verbal Behavior. It will focus on

applying the science of Applied Behavior Analysis in conjunction with Verbal

Behavior to children with autism and other developmental disabilities

through:

-An account of. the history of ABA/ VB

- Overview of the verbal operants

- Necessary teaching repertories

- Reinforcement and pairing with reinforcement

- Fading in demands

- The BLAF/ the ABLLS (what it is, how to interpret)

-Functional behavioral assessments and behavior intervention plans

-Establishing instructional control through the manipulation of antecedents

and consequences (teaching procedures and behavior protocols)

-Natural environment training and intensive teaching

This workshop will illustrate useful strategies and procedures as well as

effective teaching techniques with live footage and hands-on examples.

Teaching Verbal Behavior:

Comprehensive Program Development Workshop

Presented by Holly Kibbe, MS, BCABA and Cherish Twigg, MS, BCABA,

This FOUR-day workshop is designed to provide consultants, therapists and

parents (who take an active role in their child?s language program) with

guided practice in implementing the methods described in Dr. Carbone?s Intro

toVerbal Behavior Workshop #1. This workshop combines both the workshop

entitled Teaching Verbal behavior in the Intensive Teaching Environment

(ITT) and, Teaching Verbal Behavior in the NET, into a full four day

comprehensive workshop. During the first two days, participants will spend

most of their time practicing the methods of effective instruction

demonstrated during the Intro Workshop. Participants will have the

opportunity to develop intensive teaching programs based upon a completed

ABLLS grid and will learn the skills necessary to implement these programs.

Individual feedback will be provided. During the last two days of this

workshop, participants will receive precise methodology to teach children

with autism across all learner levels in the natural environment.

Participants will have the opportunity to develop NET programs and lesson

plans for all learner levels. Participants will be provided with supervised

practice.

These 3 free workshops will be held at the Connelly Center at Gwynedd Mercy

College

Sunday nights...from 6:30-9:00 pm

Natural Environment teaching April 2, 2006

Participants will learn to use Skinner?s analysis of verbal behavior to

understand the differences between verbal behaviors that are mands, tacts,

echoics, motor imitation and intraverbals and nonverbal behaviors such as

receptive identification, receptive commands and receptive by feature

function and class. Participants will learn how to apply this analysis in

the natural environment to help the learner develop a more complete verbal

repertoire. Video demonstrations and examples of natural environment

teaching will be provided.

Play and Socialization April 23, 2006

Participants will learn strategies to condition appropriate toy play and to

become an automatically reinforcing activity. They will learn how to teach

important play skills within that reinforcing activity. Participants will

learn how to condition peers as reinforcers and teach social skills that

will increase interactions with peers.

Creating a Willing learner May 7, 2006

This workshop designed for Speech, Physical and Occupational Therapists, who

work with children with Autism. The goal of this workshop is to demonstrate

effective teaching and reinforcement methods that will keep the child with

Autism engaged, responding and learning. These methods can be used to teach

all kinds of skills and are not limited to the Verbal Behavior curriculum.

Participants will learn how to; use errorless learning, prompting with

transfer procedures, fast paced teaching, how and when to use reinforcement

so that cooperation and effort from the child will gradually increase and to

keep inappropriate behaviors from increasing
