Guest guest
Good morning everyone, This is a question regarding vasectomy and risk of prostate cancer Some studies done in the 90¢s demonstrated that men who undergo a vasectomy had a higher incidence of developing prostate cancer.1,2,3,4 Resent studies concluded that vasectomy does not increase the risk of prostate cancer, even after 25 years of more after the surgery5. Are there recent studies about the subject? Lili Cote de Bejarano 1. Rosenberg L, et al. Vasectomy and the risk of prostate cancer. Am J Epidemiol. 1990; 132(6):1051-1055. 2. Giovannucci E, et al. Guest guest
Yes but Lili one study, however carefully done, can't be allowed to completely annul an avalanche of other data. And I believe the study should be carefully read because common ideological assumptions often drive these papers in modern times, and lead authors at times to unjustified negative conclusions. For recent studies affirming association however (RR more than 2) see Rohrmann et al, Cancer Causes Control 2005 Dec;16(10): 1189-94, from Hopkins..This was longitudinal and I suspect better methodology. Offhand I note the negative studies were case-control ones subject to selection issues, and also which used "newly diagnosed" cases, which deserves some thought as to how this affects this kind of investigation (e.g. Stanford et al Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev. 1999 Oct; 8(10): 881-6.Regards,DominicSent from my BlackBerry Smartphone provided by AlltelDate: Tue, 9 Sep 2008 08:17:53 -0700 (PDT)To: <nfpprofessionals >Subject: Vasectomy and risk of prostate cancer Good morning everyone, This is a question regarding vasectomy and risk of prostate cancerSome studies done in the 90’s demonstrated that men who undergo a vasectomy had a higher incidence of developing prostate cancer.1,2,3,4 Resent studies concluded that vasectomy does not increase the risk of prostate cancer, even after 25 years of more after the surgery5.
