The papilla or (preferably) the optic disc is not a structure. It is just

the appearance of the lamina cribrosa (a thin bit of the sclera with holes

for the blood vessels and nerves) through the retina. I would translate the

sentence as:

Anatomically the papilla (or optic disc) represents the lamina cribrosa,

thus it is bordered by the solid sclera.

" Gefässblatt " in this case is really just a layer of blood vessels. The

retina lies between two such layers. The blood vessels can be seen through

the edge of the optic disc, but not through the middle, because that is

where the nerves are. I would translate it as:

Due to the underlying vessels, the border of the optic disc first appears in

various shades of red.
