Re: What a difference a week makes

Hi ,

Great to hear of this turn around. So hard to ever know exactly what

helps to bring these changes, usually a mix of things I suspect, and

from what you describe I would think all of these things factored

into it. The Native Remedies/medication can help alleviate the

anxiety to a point where they are able to resist compulsions, and to

be able to participate in therapy/ERP.

I did mention the nine yr change idea and concerns around death, and

it does seem to me that at least some of the thought stuff is age

specific. Ours is a teen and was obsessed with identity issues, need

to be " tough " , this sort of thing.

There is no amount of " talking " about it that helps, just need to

have the insight that the obsessive nature of it is OCD, while

the " concern " part is a normal, human thing, both of which the answer

really is to just " sit " with it if you know what I mean. However

they get to this place of not " reacting " to the thoughts, this

ultimately is the answer I am seeing now clearly with ours.

Our son will speak about being bored and used to leave the classroom

frequently. Bored seemed to cover many things - couldn't focus,

couldn't tolerate something in the class " just right " stuff, needed

to move, restless, can't feel trapped. Some of this is part of who

our son is, then tangled with OCD stuff. Find ours was not good at

explaining what the problem was often and would use the " bored " thing

as a catch all. It is a form of avoidance too, I think, a form of

coping really, albeit not the ultimate answer, dare I say a male thing

(?).

I remember early on when our son started seeing someone for ERP, he

would also come out revitalized, with a better understanding and

feeling more powerful against the OCD. Our situation turned, and

ours got worse and then meds were needed and we travelled a bit of an

odyssey for a couple of years after that. But, I do believe that

having had that understanding about the OCD and what he needed to do

to combat it from the outset was a critical piece that somewhere deep

down he understood, and he is now able to employ.

The twists and turns with recovery with this disorder are different

for everyone and they just play out as they will. But the end goal

of ERP/not responding to the thoughts, is the way out, getting to

this place is generally the challenge. Sounds like you are already

there, at least in the understanding part, so this is HUGE!

Again, so happy to hear your news!

Hugs!

See that is how I am when I am not on medication.  I so want to be off the

Anafranil, but

it does work wonders for me.
