Guest guest
Hi, We're trying to make the decision to go public or private for our now 8th grade daughter's high school next year. She's been diagnosed with both OCD and ADHD and is in public now and doing quite well in school; most of her problems occur at home when she has anxiety attacks over her homework. Her OCD also flares up big time when she's tired so some nights we'll decide it's better to go to bed than finish the work. We have heard from other parents that our local high school has some excellent support systems in place (accommodation, teaching specialists, readers to make exams oral rather than written). We were trying to lay the groundwork for a 504 in middle school, but the guidance counselor said she isn't doing poorly enough to warrant one. Has anybody encountered this problem? We know that the pressure in high school will crush her if were not prepared and we'd rather get the support in place before she fails. Guest guest
Hi, my son was considered gifted/advanced (read that as they knew he was capable) and he had a 504 Plan. For him when OCD began, his grades and work suffered. But when things got better and he was back to straight A's, we still kept his 504 Plan. So - first his grades improved due to his using the accommodations and modifications in the 504 Plan. But later he used the Plan less and then even later not at all. But since OCD can cause problems " at any time " as we all know (wax & wane), we kept the Plan in place. I think the *key* to get the Plan started is to be able to tell them how it is affecting her work. Is he spending more time getting it done than the typical/average student? Are there nights she just cannot do schoolwork at all (read it or write it or...) or that she can only get " so much " done due to OCD interfering (and anxiety or stress she might get can increase her OCD too). Is turning in work late, or not at all, due to not being able to finish it on time to hand in, affecting her grades? Think of any way that her OCD is getting in the way with her education, that she struggles, that she is having to put in more time, work harder, is getting help from others...anything that is more than the typical/average student. The school has to take into consideration things like extra time and extra effort (outside help is included, tutors, help from parents...) that she is now doing to maintain her current grades. And if her grades are getting marked down due to any diagnosis/OCD problems, they need to consider that too. also could " shut down " some nights and nothing got done or very little. So we had an accommodation that he could turn in late work with no grade penalty.
