Hi all...

I know we all stress over IEP's and 504's.... I finally came to terms

with the fact that my children require them... my oldest is ADD,

exactly like my sister and my son is ADHD and OCD... My son tends to

spend some time in the office with the office staff because of his

inability to keep his hands to himself or for saying innapropriate

things. He has a split second temper and a few years ago told kids

he was going to kill them because they wouldn't let him play.

Luckily, he was very young and the school did not discipline him by

suspension or expulsion like they could, but I realized after

that.... if my son has an IEP or 504, it is a legal document that

shows he lacks certain skills or needs extra assistance on certain

things, etc. This form is what can save your child should they act

out innapropriately. If the child says something and it can be shown

that it is a part of their " issues/disability " it is less likely they

will be removed from their school should they do something extreme.

I pray it will never come to that, but I know that when kids bully my

son, he reacts with words... I am thankful that we have a 504 in

place that says impulsiveness and control are issues he has. It

forces the school to acknowledge him for who he is!

I do not advocate any child getting a free pass for poor behavior,

but we need to protect our children.

Vicki
