receptive picture/object ID - help!

Hello, one of my students (4 yrs old) is still having difficulty

discriminating when we put two objects/pictures out. He can do a

field of one and a field of 2 with a distractor item. But when I put

two together he doesn't seem to get it - it is about 50%. I tried

pairing the sign with the sd and it helped a little w/ his

attention/focus but he still isn't getting it. His receptive

commands are also difficult. His non-verbal imitation just clicked -

after working about 5 movements all year, he can imitate almost any

movement, including oral-motor (he is pretty much non-verbal, so it's

great he is beginning to imitate some speech sounds). He does some

approximations when requesting and seems really interested in how the

mouth/voice works.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone worked with a kid like this (very

good at visual-spatial tasks like sorting/matching/etc but great

difficulty with anything receptive). I tried using reinforcing

objects - he can arrange #'s 1-10 so I tried the number 2 and mom,

and he still guesses - does great with prompting, then when the

prompt is faded he is stuck. I just started introducing " touch "

instead of " give " because I think he may be confusing it with PECS -

thinking he is requesting the pictures/objects?? Any advice would be

greatly appreciated - he's such a bright little boy with a lot of

potential - I would love to hear from anyone that has gone through

the same situation and could share some knowledge/wisdom. Should I

keep changing the materials every several weeks if he is not

progressing - that is what I have been doing - trying a different way

every couple of weeks hoping to break through. Thanks for your help,

Sharon
