Guest guest
Hi Kelley, All kids can mand to some degree. A mand is nothing more than a request. To begin developing a child`s manding ability you need to decide what level of mand the child is at so you can decide what the next level to teach is. If the child is pointing or bringing parents to the item but not using sounds or words for mands then the next step will likely be sign language. If the child is able (and willing) to echo on request then you would begin with vocal manding. I don't know if anyone can give you enough info over an email to explain the complete process. Chapter 13 " Teach Your Child Functional Speech with Verbal Behavior " of my book " Educate Toward Recovery " will take you through the process step by step. Regardless of if the child needs to use sign language as a bridge to spoken language or is already using mands of one word or more, the book ETR will help you know how to get where you are going. I know I mention the book a lot online but answering questions like this is exactly why it was published. See www.lulu.com/knospe-aba for information and reviews. Good luck, ________________________ Schramm, MA, BCBA www.lulu.com/knospe-aba www.knospe-aba.com ________________________ [ ] manding I have a student that I want to start the manding process with could you tell me how to mand and is there a list of items to start with? Guest guest
Oops, I just reread your email. You asked about a list of things to start with. That list needs to be individualized for your child. What are the child's most valuable things? Foods, drinks, objects, and activities. The more valuable (and often available) an object is the easier it will be to teach a mand for. So, always start with the items and activities that are strongly motivating for your child and that your child can have on a daily basis. Remember, objects like gummi bears can be cut into threes and milk can be poored only a little into the glass at a time to keep the number of mand trials high throughout the day. ________________________ Schramm, MA, BCBA www.lulu.com/knospe-aba www.knospe-aba.com ________________________ [ ] manding I have a student that I want to start the manding process with could you tell me how to mand and is there a list of items to start with?
