Friends,

I urge women to sign this statement and to ask other women to do so. Can we reach 750,000 women? I think we can,

Fr.

http://womenspeakforthemselves.com/

OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT OBAMA, SECRETARY SEBELIUS AND

MEMBERS OF CONGRESS

DON'T CLAIM TO SPEAK FOR ALL WOMEN

We are women who support the competing voice offered by

Catholic institutions on matters of sex, marriage and family life. Most of us

are Catholic, but some are not. We are Democrats, Republicans and Independents.

Many, at some point in our careers, have worked for a Catholic institution. We

are proud to have been part of the religious mission of that school, or

hospital, or social service organization. We are proud to have been associated

not only with the work Catholic institutions perform in the community –

particularly for the most vulnerable -- but also with the shared sense of

purpose found among colleagues who chose their job because, in a religious

institution, a job is always also a vocation.

Those currently invoking " women's health " in an

attempt to shout down anyone who disagrees with forcing religious institutions

or individuals to violate deeply held beliefs are more than a little mistaken,

and more than a little dishonest. Even setting aside their simplistic equation

of " costless " birth control with " equality, " note that they

have never responded to the large body of scholarly research indicating that

many forms of contraception have serious side effects, or that some forms act

at some times to destroy embryos, or that government contraceptive programs

inevitably change the sex, dating and marriage markets in ways that lead to

more empty sex, more non-marital births and more abortions. It is women who

suffer disproportionately when these things happen.

No one speaks for all women on these issues. Those who

purport to do so are simply attempting to deflect attention from the serious

religious liberty issues currently at stake. Each of us, Catholic or not, is

proud to stand with the Catholic Church and its rich, life-affirming teachings

on sex, marriage and family life. We call on President Obama and our

Representatives in Congress to allow religious institutions and individuals to

continue to witness to their faiths in all their fullness.

Dear All,

I keep wondering who the economic winners and losers are in the HHS debate. These two articles from the Post and the Times are worth comparing/contrasting/ and sharing with others. (The message I sent to one columnist is below. That was before the Post article came out in the Health section today.)

http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/iud-implant-the-pill-cost-may-play-a-role-in-choice-of-contraceptives/2012/02/15/gIQAGnrWKR_story.html

I'm afraid this golden opportunity to get the facts out may not last long.

Praying,

Jean

Sent this to a columnist-

I'm hoping you will think a bit more about what the recent HHS mandates are forcing on women and what an injustice they really are to us. Did you read the recent article in the NY Times about how injectable contraceptives raise the risk of HIV? http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/04/health/04hiv.html?pagewanted=all or this one? http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/18/us/for-women-under-30-most-births-occur-outside-marriage.html?pagewanted=all & src=ISMR_AP_LO_MST_FB

I've used and taught fertility awareness and would be happy to give you information about it.

Medical professionals ( and the government) may be coercive toward minorities, poor women, women with disabled children, single women, etc. Women may well be caught up in a stampede toward iimplantable or injectable contraception. or sterilization which takes away their choice to have children permanently. Fertility awareness demands self restraint from men- contraception demands nothing. Who are going to be the winners here? Over the years the destructive nature of this mandate will be very clear. Please take a second look. Thanks so much! Jean

Fr. ,Very good piece on CCD and very good comments that follow.I, like a couple of others, tried to add my name to the Women Speak for Themselves but haven't heard back from Helen Alvare and don't see my name on the list.  Maybe there have been so many requests that she can't keep up :).

Friends,

I urge women to sign this statement and to ask other women to do so. Can we reach 750,000 women? I think we can,

OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT OBAMA, SECRETARY SEBELIUS AND MEMBERS OF CONGRESS

DON'T CLAIM TO SPEAK FOR ALL WOMEN

We are women who support the competing voice offered by Catholic institutions on matters of sex, marriage and family life. Most of us are Catholic, but some are not. We are Democrats, Republicans and Independents. Many, at some point in our careers, have worked for a Catholic institution. We are proud to have been part of the religious mission of that school, or hospital, or social service organization. We are proud to have been associated not only with the work Catholic institutions perform in the community – particularly for the most vulnerable -- but also with the shared sense of purpose found among colleagues who chose their job because, in a religious institution, a job is always also a vocation.

Those currently invoking " women's health " in an attempt to shout down anyone who disagrees with forcing religious institutions or individuals to violate deeply held beliefs are more than a little mistaken, and more than a little dishonest. Even setting aside their simplistic equation of " costless " birth control with " equality, " note that they have never responded to the large body of scholarly research indicating that many forms of contraception have serious side effects, or that some forms act at some times to destroy embryos, or that government contraceptive programs inevitably change the sex, dating and marriage markets in ways that lead to more empty sex, more non-marital births and more abortions. It is women who suffer disproportionately when these things happen.

No one speaks for all women on these issues. Those who purport to do so are simply attempting to deflect attention from the serious religious liberty issues currently at stake. Each of us, Catholic or not, is proud to stand with the Catholic Church and its rich, life-affirming teachings on sex, marriage and family life. We call on President Obama and our Representatives in Congress to allow religious institutions and individuals to continue to witness to their faiths in all their fullness.

Dear All,I keep wondering who the economic winners and losers are in the HHS debate. These two articles from the Post and the Times are worth comparing/contrasting/ and sharing with others. (The message I sent to one columnist is below. That was before the Post article came out in the Health section today.)

I'm afraid this golden opportunity to get the facts out may not last long.Praying,JeanSent this to a columnist-I'm

hoping you will think a bit more about what the recent HHS mandates are forcing on women and what an injustice they really are to us. Did you read the recent article in the NY Times about how injectable contraceptives raise the risk of HIV? http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/04/health/04hiv.html?pagewanted=all or this one? http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/18/us/for-women-under-30-most-births-occur-outside-marriage.html?pagewanted=all & src=ISMR_AP_LO_MST_FB

I've used and taught fertility awareness and would be happy to give you information about it. Medical professionals ( and the government) may be coercive toward minorities, poor women, women with disabled

children, single women, etc. Jean

Contraceptive Used in Africa May Double Risk of H.I.V. www.nytimes.comA new study suggests that an injectable, hormonal contraceptive popular with African women has biological properties that may make women and men more vulnerable to H.I.V. infection.

Thanks Peggy,Maybe you can make some comment to the sad man who comments so falsely about St. maria.

Fr.

Fr. ,Very good piece on CCD and very good comments that follow.I, like a couple of others, tried to add my name to the Women Speak for Themselves but haven't heard back from Helen Alvare and don't see my name on the list.  Maybe there have been so many requests that she can't keep up :).

Peggy
