Guest guest
Hi all, You all have been here for me through so much and I wanted to share some positive news. First off, DD is doing very well this year. She had an initial flare up at the beginning of the year - and has been much better after going back on the Prozac. She most likely has ADHD as well - we tried Focalin for this last weekend - it seemed to increase her anxiety - so, not sure how we will wind up treating the ADHD. Her grades are good - but homework is a continuous struggle. Anyway, we had a meeting with the principal as our younger DD is starting kindergarten next year and we were inquiring about some programs (she's been in a Montessori school and is doing some advanced work - so, we're trying to make sure she remains challenged next year). Anyway, we started talking about our older DD and OCD. I mentioned how difficult it's been to educate the teachers each year and all the " stigmas " (school counselor's word to me) and stereotypes about OCD. I mentioned that my DH and I would be happy to come in on an " early release day " (kids are released early and the teachers spend the afternoons in educational seminars) to do a power point/educational seminar for OCD for the teachers. The principal was super excited about this and referred me to the teacher who schedules these conferences. She is also very excited and feels that this is a much needed topic of education. We most likely won't speak until Feb or March. I would welcome any ideas that you all have as I begin to put my power point together. I remember that there is an excellent handout in the files section on the " role of school with OCD " . One thing I've heard over and over again through the years is " wow, we didn't know that fear of throwing up is OCD - I always thought it's washing your hands over and over " . While we all know that the germ contamination/hand washing is one fear with OCD - there are so many. In my presentation - I wanted to try to present some different case scenarios of real OCD fears - so, if any of you are willing to share your stories with me (of course, I'd never use names or any identifying info) that you'd be willing for me to share - please let me know. I'm so excited about this opportunity and feel grateful at the chance to further educate the teachers about OCD. Happy Holidays to all, Anne
Guest guest
, What an awesome opportunity! There are two points I would love for all teachers to know. First, the point that Vicki made about OCD and her own depression - please separate the disorder from the person. When we figured out how to do this, the change was HUGE. It's like the child is trapped inside, hidden behind the behaviors (thus we refer to flair ups as Blair Syndrome from the Exorcist : ) ). Our son finally stopped feeling unfairly " condemned " . We sruggled with how to discipline with a disorder and stumbled onto naming behaviors/emotions and now talk to " Edgar the Angry " or " Warren the Worrier " when our son acts up. But like others have mentioned, we don't let our son use this as an excuse. Edgar still has to go into time out or lose privilages for misbehavior, and thus, my son has to suffer the consequences too. Thus it's in his best interest to learn how to control these " other guys " and he's ultimately responsible for his actions, disorder or not. The second point is to please let the parents be part of the school team. Our school is generally good making accomodations for kids with special needs, they tend to have the attitude of " we're trained professionals, let us handle it " instead of " please share with us what works for your child. " It's so alientating and makes it hard to " turn over your child " for 8 hours a day. Then we're left to handle the stress and issues he's buried while at school. It would be so much better for everyone if we were treated as peers and teammates instead of outsiders. Sorry for the long post. It's just a speech I wish I could give to our own school. When you're done with your powerpoint, maybe you could share it with the rest of us. You go girl! (oh - by the way, there's a book called " Teaching the Tiger " that gives specific ideas for teaching kids with ADHD, OCD and TS - it's $35, but you may want to recommend it for the teachers) => if any of you are willing to share your stories with me (of course, > I'd never use names or any identifying info) that you'd be willing > for me to share - please let me know. > > I'm so excited about this opportunity and feel grateful at the chance > to further educate the teachers about OCD. > > Happy Holidays to all, > Anne >
Guest guest
I did a powerpoint presentation for my son's middle school staff last fall before he entered the school (Just before school started). About 150 staff showed up. It was a one hr presentation about how they might recognise undiagnosed OCD or who they might want to refer, how it looks at home, how it may look at school, learning problems, social problems, treatment modalities, side effects , etc. It was very general about oCD. Then I gave a seperate hr lecture to my sons team, with specifics for just him. I am happy to share with anyone. I am a physician but made it clear to the staff that I qualified to give this lecture not because of my MD, but because of my MOM status of a child with OCD. i am happy to share my presentation with anyone- use what you like, throw away the rest. if anyone wants it, just let me know and I will email it to you. I am not sure how to post it here on the website.

Guest guest
I would love to get a copy of your presentation, ! My daughter does not qualify for services at school but I've chatted with the school psychologist about OCD and she's got a couple of kids that she believes may have it. I'd really like to see what you said about it and, possibly, pass it on to the school psychologist! Thanks! You can email me directly at: BethBV@... Guest guest
I have attached my file and sent it to those of you who wanted copies directly ( I think I got you all- maybe I better check (2 million times - Ha, Ha )If I missed you and you want it I sent it to Louis Harkins who will upload it to the files and you can get it from there or email me. The last portion relates directly to my son Quinn and is headed Quinn. I left it in because it is an example of things I thought would help to ask for. You can delete the whole section or just change the name or add or delete things that pertain to your kid. The first part is about OCD in general- again feel free to add or take away anything you wish. Hope it helps someone. My shcool has been FABULOUS in response. Couldn't ask for more ( he does have a 504 and has been relatively well since starting there but still. I know they will work with me and we all have at least baseline knowlege
