Guest guest
Hi, Annie. These are some books we found really helpful. Guest guest
I believe ERP (Exposure Response (or Ritual?) Prevention) is a form of CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy). In our case the therapist never used either term but that is exactly what he did with our daughter (and taught us to do with her). It is simply deliberately exposing the child to something that triggers their anxiety . . . and then preventing the child from engaging in rituals which relieve the anxiety. Kate was terrified of " germs " but only in specific situations or from specific individuals (fortunately!). It was to the point that she had a hard time being in the same classroom with him. One time she picked up a water bottle that had rolled under her desk and read his last name on it. She totally lost it . . . wanted to come home and take a bath but her teacher (who also has OCD) told her she could go wash her hands ONE TIME and come back. That was a form of ERP for Kate. The more formal ERP for her took the form of wearing her coat (the one that this boy might have touched). Later she was encouraged to approach this boy . . . get within arms length of him. And, finally, she was able to actually touch him but that pretty much did her in! The important thing for Kate to realize was that the anxiety will eventually go away on it's own . . . without engaging in the ritual. She used to change clothes the second she walked in the door after school but now she is able to wait until after her homework is doen. When it gets bad we hold her on our lap and calmly say, " That scared feeling will go away . . . give it time . . . " All these techniques are in " What to Do When Your Brain Gets Stuck. " It helped her SO much! I hope it works as well for your son! Beth What books should I buy? I have " What to Do When Your Brain Gets Stuck " in my Amazon shopping cart and am looking for suggestions on other resources. My 7 year old son has been recently diagnosed with OCD. He's had 2 sessions of CBT so far. I see some people listing " ERP " - can someone tell me what that is? Thanks, Annie _____
