I would like to pick someone's brain about this. If you have any

experience with cauda equina symdrome (conservatively or surgically

managed) please contact me by email off list. Time is running out for

a sweet puppy that was orphaned at my hospital.

Thanks,

Hi .

I work on the tail and ther ex for core and hip rotator muscle

Amie

I am wondering what kind of success people have had reducing urinary/

fecal incontinence

in these cases too.

How do you get dogs to do Kegle exercises!!!!

I work with what I've got-- docked tail or not. Also, Laurie Edge-'s

sacral traction techniques work well.

Dr -- I have seen a few dogs go back to field trial competition after sx for LS disease. With evidence of compression, your dog is likely a surgery candidate. But there are risks (in addition to post-op scarring). Since your Retriever is already 8 years old, he would likely only have another 1 or 2 years to compete. With a dorsal laminectomy - discectomy - foraminotomy, there is some risk of a catastrophic incident after they go back to training. We saw a 9 year old field trial Pointer that was operated for traumatic LS subluxation and went back to training. Nine months after the surgery, at a field trial, he showed acute pain and had suffered a 2nd LS sublux with fracture through the bridging bone ventral to L7-S1, and mild neuro deficits. The neurosurgeon felt that any surgical attempt at stabilization was likely to fail, so the dog was rehabed conservatively. After 6 weeks of confinement and leash walks, he was pain free (and you couldn't hear the bone grating when he walked any more). This time, the rehab was longer, and about one year later, he was back competing and won a few more field trials before the owner retired him. I wouldn't necessarily be discouraged about the energy level of your dog -- field trial Retrievers are all taught heel and sit commands, and they can show a lot of self-control if you handle them the way their handler does. There is another conservative approach that you may already know about -- some veterinarians who work with Greyhounds treat LS disease in young dogs and sometimes in the older dogs too with DepoMedrol injections IM either side of the LS space. You can find the specifics at http://greythealth.com/lumbosacral.htm.

I would be grateful if anyone has any input on Cauda Equina syndrome-success of Rehab-with or without sx.

I have a client with an 8yr old Fsp Labrador who is presently a competing Field Trial Dog. She has recently developed mild ataxia and CP deficits of her rear limbs. The Neurologist felt there was pain with tail movement but not on direct palpation of the L/S spine.

MRI revealed sig. cord compression and evidence of disc degeneration at the L/S disc space. No previous hx of Neurologic or back issues and the rest of the spine looked great.

If possible the owner would like to train and continue to compete with this dog. My feeling is this dog will likely not be able to return to Field Trial work.

I know the Px tends to be good with sx. but I have read that scar tissue can develop post-op with the return of symptoms.

Could Rehab limit this? Or is this influenced more by the surgery, the conformation of the dog or the types of activity and exercise that the dog partakes in?

This dog is an extremely athletic, high energy dog. Post-operatively she is going to be active as soon as she is able.

Has anyone had good success with Rehabbing this condition without sx? Following sx?

I would appreciate any input
