Advancing Peer, Play and Social Skills

Play is much more than simply a fun way to occupy

leisure time. It is a necessary precursor to language,

social, cognitive and adaptive skills, and an

effective way to decrease behavioral anomalies.

Unfortunately, many of the core deficits of autism

such as rigid thinking, aversion to change, repetitive

and restrictive behaviors and difficulties with

perspective taking prevent children on the spectrum

from acquiring fundamental play skills. Additionally,

most intervention programs address play and social

skills from either a behavioral or developmental

perspective, when both disciplines are necessary to

promote the child’s optimal development. Join us for

an interactive workshop, consisting of video and

hands-on demonstrations and active participant

practice, designed to advance your child’s play, peer

and social skills. Effective intervention techniques

will be addressed from both an Applied Behavior

Analysis and Relationship Development Intervention

perspective.

Topics to be covered include: how to teach the “rules”

of play such as turn-taking, following structured and

rule-based games, and peer modeling using an ABA

approach; how to further interactive and social play

and encourage peer enjoyment using an RDI approach;

how to facilitate play in school, with siblings and

among peers; how to accurately track data without

detracting from the social interaction; what toys and

props support different play scenarios; and how to

incorporate play in your child’s IEP goals.
