A little OT - Training dog and boy!

A couple of years ago someone posted about clicker training. We'd like to get a

new dog next summer, and I want to read about clicker training. Can anyone

recommend a particular book or resource? I noticed there were several authors

who have written about clicker training, but wasn't sure which book would be

more practical or if there are differences in approaches in clicker training.

If you have done clicker training before, tell me if you think I will have any

problems with this -- I would control the clicker to " mark " the desired behavior

but my son would be the deliverer of the tangible reinforcer.

Also, we would love some suggestions in involving our son in training the dog.

My objectives for having him be involved would be:

1. Have my son become a strong reinforcer for the dog. The dog will likely

gravitate towards my more playful neurotypical son if we don't set this up

carefully.

2. Give my son some means of interacting with the dog through delivering

commands and reinforcers.

Thanks,

Geraldine

If you could respond to the group, I would appreciate it, as our almost 17-yo

dog died recently. BTW, what is clicker training?!

Thanks,

Judy Armstrong

Clicker training is like VB for animals! Well, sort of. It is also based on

Skinner's principles of operant conditioning.

Clicker training involves using a little device that the trainer clicks when the

animal performs a desired behavior. The " click " lets the animal know that

whatever behavior just occurred was good. The click is a conditioned

reinforcer. Initially there's a process of pairing the click with the delivery

of a primary reinforcer. Then the primary reinforcer is faded back.
